help with making my costume? (polymer clay)
So I think I finally decided on a halloween costume. I'll go as a person recently mauled by a werewolf and is starting to get subtle changes (fangs, claws, pointy ears, bit of facial makeup, along with some wounds)...think like in "Ginger Snaps" if you've seen that movie.
I can get the ears and fangs fine but not sure on the claws. These are as close as I could find to what I want, they look pretty big though, and I have thin fingers, so I'm thinking they'd probably be too big. They also glow in the dark which I'd rather not (though I could paint them). Oh and every other site I found them on said 'special order 3-4 weeks', so I don't want to risk not having them in time for halloween.
I checked some local costume shop sites for them but didn't find them, so after watching some cool youtube videos of people making full on werewolf costumes, I found out they are using translucent polymer clay (like Fimo and Sculpey) to make teeth on the masks, and I'm wondering if I could make my own claws. I haven't worked with this stuff since I was a kid so I don't remember at all what it's like, just watched some videos of people using the stuff...anyone think it could work? And what would I use to glue them on? I'd want to make sure they really stick but be able to take them off too (superglue??).
Also if anyone has ideas on what to do on my face, I was thinking of using some wax or similar product to alter my brow and nose area. And any makeup suggestions? Oh and I would have liked to wear contacts but they're a bit pricey plus I don't know my 'size' (which also costs to get fitted)...so is there some way to make my blue eyes really pop or something?
As for clothing, I might go to value village etc to get a shirt I don't mind ripping up :P
I would think your best bet is finding one of those Halloween stores (Halloween USA, if you've got one?) and checking out the special effects make-up. They've got liquid latex and spirit gum you can use to alter your facial features (make your nose bigger, give yourself bigger brow bones, make gashes, that sort) and you can also get some hair to fix to your face. It's not horribly expensive.
As for the nails, I would've just gotten really long false nails, cut them in the shape of claws, and apply them. If you really want to make them out of polymer clay, to make sure they stick well without having to be super glued to your hands, what about making them almost like rings that'll fit around your finger, just below the nail bed at that first joint? You can even glue some fake hair to your finger tips and give yourself hairy knuckles to help hide it.
I second the liquid latex and gum for altering your face. I've never had experience with polymer clay, though!
I think the polymer clay might be a good option, but NEVER SUPERGLUE ANYTHING TO YOUR BODY! You could probably use nail glue that's for attaching fake nails. Whatever you buy, get the solvent that unglues it and test them beforehand. Polymer clay is pretty easy to work with. You just knead it until it gets warm and soft, then form it and bake it in the oven. You could make whole fake fingertips so that it seems like your hands are getting bigger, using CD's ring idea. (You can easily imbed metal objects in polymer clay before baking.)
Have fun!
From what I read, nail glue and superglue are the same thing: link. The thing is, those are for people wanting to wear them for days, obviously I just want it for one night lol, but if I use something less strong it would suck if they start falling off while I'm out. In another yahoo thread someone suggested putting a coat of clear polish on first, so it doesn't peel your nail - thoughts? I've never worn fake nails... and anyone know if nail polish remover would ruin the baked clay?
I bought the polymer clay today, looking forward to playing around with it :P hopefully I can make work.
