Find things you like to do. If you don't like doing it, you just won't force yourself to do it (long term anyway, which is the goal in losing weight, right?!)

Try everything you think seems fun and stick with the one you where you say to yourself "I wouldn't mind doing THIS every day. . ." (I found jogging. . .that's what turned me from a couch potato to one of those nuts that wakes up at 5:30am to work out)

That being said, if you really hate most forms of exercise, start really slow, do it consistently (every day) and build it up!

Good luck!

Let's face it, the gym is, well, boring. There is absolutely nothing in the human brain that evolved to drive us to get on a treadmill or stationary bike.

I go to the gym and there are a gaggle of other gym rats there -- we are all really the same -- mostly incredibly competitive with ourselves and each other to a lesser degree (but we all pay attention to who works out harder around us). We all have our iPODs stuffed in our ears and use music to crank up our activity level. We may say "Hello" or nod a greeting to another regular. Yep. Not a social bunch. We are what's called "intrinsically motivated" -- which means we can push through levels of boredom that stagger the more normal brain.

But there is also a gym class that comes in and that's a different experience. It's all women, very social bunch of all shapes and sizes, a female trainer who is on them in a friendly but fairly persistent way and they chit chat in between sets.

Are you the social type? Then you've got a lot of activities to choose from. Beyond the gym class I described, there's belly dancing or burlesque for having fun (and boy will that work on your middle), or kick boxing and self-defense (to get strong)...the list is endless.

Are you more about nature? If you're social, join a walking group in your area. If you are a loner, then just get out and walk. Humans and their brains are really well built for walking (about 12 miles a day is what our ancestors were actually built to do). In addition to getting stronger, you will also think a lot better as well.

Anyhow, just some off the cuff ideas for you -- hope it helps!

I am your same height and weight, and I want to get back to my goal weight of about 145.  So we are on the same journey it seems!

I have tried tons of classes in the past and really liked pilates, hot yoga, kick boxing and indoor soccer.  I also just like going for a walk outside or riding a stationary bike indoors.  I am going to try to do more of the bike, walking, and adding in situps/pushups/weights at home.

For me the hard part will be getting my eating back on track.  I have fallen into some bad habits - snacking at night, eating in the afternoon when I am bored at work, drinking wine with my boyfriend on the couch.  All not good... all are contributing to my weight gain.

If you want to add me as a friend for some motivation, go ahead!  Good luck :)
