Help, do I need to eat more calories?
Hey all, well I've recently been told by the endocronologist to gain weight because of amenorrhea, so, I've been trying to eat more of course in the attempt to gain. I only started yesterday, though, and I ate about 2100-2200 calories I think. I don't actually know yet if I will gain from this or not, but I've been reading the forums and people are saying that if some people gain on this they're metabolism needs to be jump-started by eating somewhere around 3000-3500 calories? Would this be true for me, too? I'm 15, female, 166cm tall and weigh 112lbs. I'm really very new to this and would like some advice.
Also, is it okay if I feel like I'm eating a lot? Like for example, yesterday for my afternoon snack I made myself a bowl of oatmeal with peanut butter and I felt like it was pretty big for my snack, considering usually I would eat two slices of crispbread with cottage cheese and salmon.
Thanks everyone.
Yes, you ideally need more calories. Start at 2500 and see what happens; it's a good place to start. Also, a bowl of oatmeal with peanut butter is not a big snack and really is an ideal one.
If you haven't already I'd check out: THE AIM IS TO GAIN: A Guide to Weight Gain, Whatever Your Reason - UPDATED as it has other tips and food ideas, too.
Ah, thank you for your answer lalabanana, I thought you would reply. :) I'll get started reading the topic right away. Thanks again.

Increasing your calories will mean you are eating more, so before you're settled into the new amount it will feel like a lot. Don't worry, you'll get used to it.
Yeah, I saw before they say for people trying to gain alot of weight, the calorie amount they tell you isn't always accurate. They've told me a good place to start is 2,500 for a few days, and if you don't gain up it to 3,000, and so on. So if you start doing 2,500 and you do gain weight I think thats an okay place to stay for a while, but if your not gaining, up it more. [it also can depend on how active you are]. And maybe if keep uping your calories up and you reallly feel full and you feel like you literally can't eat through it all, you can look up which foods have the most calories and eat more of them.
I'd suggest looking in the "weight gainers what did you eat" thread, because theres alot of good ideas of foods to eat that help you gain weight, and gives you an idea of what other people eat to gain weight and how much. Some people don't put how many calories they ate, some do, but overall it should help you. i'm one of the people who do, I usually eat anywhere from 3,000 to 4,000 a day and i put how many are from what foods. That way if you see I'm eating a certain thing with alot of calories, maybe you'd want to try it.
As a note - CC's "caloric need" estimator is NO help whatsoever. According to that thing, the calories I'll probably need to maintain should be causing me to gian 2lbs/week. So yeah. Shooting for a 2500 minimum is a good place to start, and up from there.
Its normal to feel rather full and like you are eating so, so much at first. But you will adjust to it. Getting the calories in can be made easier with the use of condiments, dressings, sauces and lots of full-fat versions of things. I've found one can mix things like olive oil or ground nuts into quite a bit of foods without any adverse affect taste-wise and it bring the calories up a lot without increasing the volume.
(Sorry, late reply!!)
Wow, rebel, that calorie estimation is way off then. o.o Thanks, I'll try using more add-ons in my food when I feel full!
Thanks tiff for your input. ^^ I actually do look in that thread a lot, I'll check it some more.
Thanks for all the help everybody.
