help! pedometer question!!
Hi im trying to determine how many calories im burning with my pedometer
My Stats,
Steps: 21108
Distance/Miles: 6.3
Cals: 651
Time: 3.38
After entering my steps and mph ect in the link below i got...
"You walked 6.20 miles, and burned 395 calories. Way to go!"
http://walking.about.com/library/cal/uccalc3. htm
The miles sound pretty spot on im just wondering is this correct..should i trust it?
On the other hand CC tells me that walking 4hours burns 504 calories
So which is more accurate??
It really depends on your current weight.
The ped. companies, and even most websites, are default set for a 150 pound person. If you weigh less then 150 lbs, you will burn fewer cals, if you weigh more, you will burn more. Once you reset all things (even the pedometer) to your weight, your speed, terrain, etc. you will have a more accurate telling of your personal calorie burn.
So... if you have all of your stats in CC and you told it your weight and the speed you were walking in your activity log, I would go with that as the more accurate estimate.
e
Yes my pedometer takes my weight..stride length but thats about it.
The link i posted also takes my weight and i feel that could be more accurate as that also takes my steps per miles and seems to of gotten the same miles walked as my pedometer said.. however i dont want to underestimate my burn ![]()
Did you make sure you picked the right walking speed when you logged it in CC? There are different numbers for each 0.5 mph range of speeds.
Yep i made sure to do so in both sites as i walk quite slow
Still not sure whether to go for the miles or the hours though ![]()
Both numbers are right.
I just figured out where you confusion is coming from. The smaller number is not taking into account the calories you burn just living. So in that 3.38 hours that you were walking, you burned approx 651 calories TOTAL. But closer to only 395 doing the actual walking. The remaniner between those two numbers were used for such mundane tasks as heart and lung function, maybe some brain action, etc.
However, if you enter it here on cc under your activity log, it will give you the larger number but then compensate on your burn meter to where it adds in the exercise cals but has already accounted for the living cals so doesn't double count.
Make sense?
Yes it does thank you! i stopped classing myself as sedentary and started using my BMR number which is 1350 and i just put my pedometer on first thing and usually add my daily total to my BMR only ive had confusion as to what that total actually is! So if im doing it that way should i just go by the 395calories and add that to my BMR(1350) ?
Thanks again! ![]()
edit* i went back to the CC tool and put it as 'household walking' (which is basicly what im doing at this time) and i got 396
