Help with processed foods!
After being told by my mother at the supermarket today that I eat too many processed foods, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it! I have lost over 15 pounds while eating some sort of processed foods throughout my day and I have never thought much of it until now. I have problems with knowing the calorie content of foods and find it much easier to just look on the box. Also, portions are a problem for me so this is also much easier! And, I'm 15 so I can't cook much and my mom doesnt either as she works.
So, is my typical diet too processey?
I'm 5'4", 121 lbs., looking to get down to 115 so I eat ~1500 NET calories a day--so whatever exercise I do--a lot!-- I eat back.
B: 1 cup Fiber One Cereal, 1 light and fit yogurt, 1 cup cantalope. (or I have 2 packets of Quaker Organic oatmeal)
L: 2 pieces wonder bread white whole grain bread, 2 eggs, more cantalope or a a sweet potato. (or a sandwhich with pb & j)
S: Today I had mini pbjs (5 ritz crackers, pb, and jelly), and tea. or I have cantalope, yogurt, watermelon, or some wheat thins.
D: This is where I have a smart one dinner with mixed veggies.
S: Probably a WW ice cream cone and maybe more fruit.
So does my typical diet have too many processed foods?
Also, I take a daily vitamin and drink 8+ cups of water a day if that helps.
Finally, how else can I incorporate more protein as I don't typically eat meat?
The way to tell is to run your food choices through the food log and check the analysis. The benchmarks are....... minimum 25g fibre, maximum 50g sugar and maximum 2400mg salt. Usually, if your diet contains too many processed foods you won't hit those benchmarks..... processed foods tend to be very high in salt and sugar and very low in fibre. A vitamin tablet doesn't really make up the shortfall.
Non-meat places to get protein.... tofu, eggs, nuts, seeds, quinoa grain, Quorn, dairy products, beans, lentils, chickpeas.
Thanks for the reply!
My fiber intake for yesterday hit that and my salt JUST fell below that, which I will definately try to eliminate certain things that have a high salt content. However, the sugar is a problem, which is another thing I'll eliminate excess of.
Thanks for the protein suggestions too! I currently eat a lot of nuts, eggs, and dairy but I will add more things such as seeds and beans! Thanks again!(:
