Help with Protein

Quote  |  Reply
After checking out my food analysis from the past two weeks, I have noticed that a trend is occurring: I haven't been getting my recommended 25% protein.  I was just wondering if you all would leave suggestions as what I can find to eat that will boost my protein but not my fat or carbs.  I've heard that yogurt is good, but unfortunately don't like it.  Your help would be greatly appreciated!!!

That's really tough, sadly. I've never found something that's JUST protein with nothing of anything else.

However, Protein Powder, depending on the brand, can have protein and carbs with very little fat. So perhaps work on some sort of protein powder and try to skim a few carbs from your diet? :)
No one ever says chicken breast (at least never first).
I like the ON Protein Diet bars that I get from BodyBuilder.com.  These are the lowest I've seen. Each bar has:

Protein 20g

Fat 4g

Cholesterol 5mg

Sodium 180mg

Carbohydrates (net) 1g

Sugars 0g

180 calories
Everything that is good to eat seems to be expensive.  Protein Diet Bars are very good, but is there anything cheaper?  I'm on a diet, but also on a tight budget.  It is very hard to find healthy and cheap food.
i agree roystonjim...good for you food is way more expensive then junk......ive been eating eggs and chicken breast for my protein....

Are you sure you need 25%?  You should go by grams per lb or kilo of body weight. Depending on the calories you are getting you may need more or less then 25%.

Skim milk doesn't have much else.

Neilson Skim Milk:

Carb: 13 grams * 4 (4 calories per gram of carbs) = 52 calories
Protein: 9 grams * 4 (same number of calories in protein) = 36 calores

Total of 88 calories. Mysteriously there are two magic calories missing. Still, milk is more carbs than anything else... and really the carbs come from sugar...
I suggested Protein bars since you were trying to eliminate carbs.

Another good item I choose is Starkist Light Water Tuna.  I'll have a couple of cans with just a litte pepper on it and that runs 125 calories per can and about 27g of protein.  CC says 0 carbs, so that might be a good alternative.

Tuna is pretty cheap at about $0.70 per can.
Here's a link to the soy milk I like to drink.  7 grams protein, 5 grams carbs, 60 calories in an eight ounce serving.

Rounding error. Hard to find a cheaper source of protein I bet. Some people pay to have it dried. Processed. Stuck into a can. Sit on a shelf for who knows how long. Why not  just drink the milk and avoid the many middle men that involved in protein powder?
As a proponent of carbs, I agree with you completely, Zeke. In general, I say drink the milk. It's certainly hard to find a cheaper source of protein, however, it would just up Irr128's carb count which she said she didn't want to do in her original post. That's all. It just didn't seem right in this particular case.

I have at LEAST two glasses of milk a day. =]

In this particular case, though, I would recommend lean meats. You can get chicken 99% fat-free as well as tuna with no carbs. Also egg whites would be great.
I like the ON Protein shakes....you can get a 2lb container on www.a1supplements.com for about $20, which would last me over a month, having 1 shake a day. You can make them with skim milk or water, and sometimes I add frozen berries or a small banana to mix it up a little.
These sound like some great ideas!  Thanks so much for all of your input!
hi, I would suggest tuna ....less than 150 cal a can, 0 carbs, .5-1.0 fat and @25g protien...cheap too!
Grilled boneless skinless chicken breast has GOT to be the easiest way to get lots of lean protein!!
Tuna sounds like a great idea!  How much mayo do you use with it?
Egg whites are my new best friend.

17 calories per egg (with yoke removed - this is where all the fat and cholesterol comes from), 3.6g protein, no fat or cholesterol. I couldn't believe it! You can boil eggs and easily scoop out the yoke to either chop up and add to a salad, or cut up and make a delicious sandwich with. I hope this helps!
I eat lean fish and chicken breast.  Also, lean pork- it's not so bad for you as people think, and really is quite lean.  If you don't like yogurt plain, maybe try making a smoothie with it?  Blend it with some fruit, juice, and ice, and you still get the protein in it.  I know nuts have a lot of fat, but they also have lots of protein if you really need to boost it.
roystonjm,   I just eat it plain with a little pepper -- no mayo.
