Help! I just scared myself.

Quote  |  Reply
So I'm standing here at work filing some paperwork when all of a sudden my heart starts beating faster than usual and I began to get spotty vision. All in all, it lasted about 5 seconds, and I'm fine now, but it scared the crap out of me when it happened. For a second I actually had a fear that I was going to pass out. I have no history of medical illness, so I dont know what to think. Has anyone else had this happen?

It might be low blood sugar, it's happened to me all my life on and off.  Sometime all the colors seem to invert, and I have to sit down.  Eat something and you should feel better :)
I actually just ate lunch. A lean pocket and a bowl of mixed baby greens...

had peanut butter crackers AND a strawberry nutrigrain bar this morning too...
Go see a doctor, there are any number of things it could be and you wont know unless you check for sure.  How long has it been since you've eaten? Sometimes low blood sugar can make you feel little dizzy and see spots.  Sometimes hitting a nerve just the right way can make you feel a bit dizzy.  I get spots/dizzy when i let my bloodsugar drop too low I'm hypoglycemic so I have to eat a little something ever few hours... perhaps you've gone too long between meals or something
It might not have hit your system yet, or maybe it is something more serious.  I know I also got that way while taking ephedra as a teen.  If it happens again give your doctor a call , hope you feel better!
That sounds like a drop in blood sugar.

It happens to me too.. I tend to eat more of my calories early in the day because of that. If you go all night, then half the day on nothing but some crackers and a nutrigrain bar, your blood sugar will probably get low.
At breakfast around 9, had a snack around 10:30/11:00, and ate lunch  at 12:45...
I wouldn't worry too much if it's the first time it's happened. I had that happen to me a few times and found out it was iron deficiency. Dizziness and weakness accompanied it. If it happens again, go to the doctor.
Have you ever had a panic attack?  Are you under alot of stress, have recently gone thru a stressfull time or are you pretty hard on yourself (meaning you don't "talk" very well to yourself) ?
havent had a panic/anxiety attack in almost 7 years...

webmd & the receptionist here at work are convinced its low blood sugar. we shall see..
Being a diabetic and having gone thru a bout of hypoglycemia a few times, i'm gonna go with LBS.  A tbl of sugar, 2 hard candies, 8 lifesavers (chewed, not sucked) should bring things back to normal.  You'll want to get some protein in there after the dizziness falls by the wayside.  Now, the food intake seems a little on the lite side.  and that could be it.

Is this all you have consumed so far today or is there anything else?

Do you normally eat like this, or is this an off day?

This is what, 600 calories in total?  Are you planning on having at least 600 calories for supper?

Do you work out / have a high activity level job?
I normally eat like this.

i had a spoonful of peanut butter about 30 minutes ago.

its just a desk job, but i do workout almost everyday and I make sure I get at least 1400 calories when i do workout.
When I had the exact same thing happen to me it was because of hyper-active thyroid.

What ever it turns out to be - it's not fatal! :D
I mean as long as you get it checked out and/or treated!!
1400 consumed and a workout of 100-200 is not too bad.

1400 consumed and a workout of 600 means you probably don't have enough intake of calories.
I get this also, I feel like it is my thyroid, like phsizzo said.  I'm going to see and endochronologist.  My doctor says it is probably anxiety, but I don't believe her.  She even tried to put me on an anti-anxiety medication.
With attention to all the other options noted above, it could also be dehydration.  Make sure your drinking adequate amounts of water.
Something similar happens to me at the beginning of a migraine.  The spotty vision usually lasts longer than a few seconds though, more like 10-30 minutes depending on how bad the oncoming pain will be.

I also have a heart problem...cardio myopathy, and when my blood pressure drops I get a quick feeling of, not so much spotty, more like tunnel vision along with dizziness.  I have to lean on something and lower my head and it goes away.  It does feel very much like I'm going to faint.

When it happened, did you just do a quick move, like stand quickly or bend and straighten quickly?
If it happens again, you should see a doc, period.  It could be caused by many things.  A spike in blood pressure, a panic attack (I used to get those, and I didn't even know what they were.  You don't have to be a stressed out "basket case" to get panic attacks.) migraines, blood sugar spike or drop.  In any event, best to get it checked out and not worry.

I have not read though the other posts yet but if this is all you ate for B-fast today no wonder why you?re feeling ill today. I was always told B-fast should be 300 or more calories, plus if gives your metabolism a good kick start for the day! Good luck I hope your feeling better!
