Help! Sick sister!
My sister is very, very sick. She is prone to dehydration and constipation, and she is a bit of a picky eater, and she's a bit lactose intolerant. (She likes starchy things.)
Does anyone have any suggestions on things that would be easy to digest and easy on an upset stomach? I can only feed the poor girl so much chicken soup before she starts chucking the bowl at me.
edit: thanks for fixing my double post. :-)

Oh boy....Starchy things will usually constipate you. I love baked sliced apples with splenda, cinnamon, and some butter spray. If she doesn't have a problem with weight use brown sugar and cinnamon and real butter.
But she is sick too....yikes. Graham crackers may be different to try. Spearmint tea soothes your tummy too. Sorry not much help here. I hope she gets better.

When I get sick like that, I sip on Power-Ade. It makes me feel soooo much better. Also, apple juice, bananas, chicken broth saltines and 7-up. Oatmeal or rice, too.
Doctors have always told me to use the BRAT diet when in doubt. Bananas, Applesauce, Rice, Toast. And variations therein. And clear liquids.
Has she been to the doctor? If not, that's who you should be asking.
She has been to the doctor. He said, 'whatever she can keep down'.
How is she today elly? I hope it's just that 24 hour virus that's going around. We all had it and it's awful.
This is a kind of porridge that goes down easy. Congee
Mine is whole grains, but you can make it with 1 cup of white rice instead of the other grains. Leave out the garlic, but the ginger is very soothing to the stomach if you have some fresh, otherwise, leave that out too. It's very good cooked in chicken broth instead of water. If you finish it in a blender to make it extra smooth it might set easier on her poor stomach.

I made her a blendered porridge this morning, actually. She kept it down okay, at least until I left for work, but the fruits my dad gave her yesterday came right back up. I'll be anxious to hear back around noon if she actually kept the porridge down all morning.
She's recovering from some rather serious female problems, it's not the flu so she will probably be miserable for another week or so. I'll try your congee tomorrow morning, or tonight if she can't handle chicken and rice, which is what we are planning on offering her for dinner. Thanks for the suggestion. :-) She is a big fan of dates, so most porridgey things that can have dried dates chopped into them are going to go over well with her.

My understanding is that congee is a very healthy soup; as is Miso. Miso is all broth with some noodles (optional) and should be good for replenishing electrolites and balancing the nutrients in the stomach and intestines. Miso can be found in grocery stores with the ethnic foods-generally.
Good luck with it all!
