Help! Skinny waist big thighs!

Quote  |  Reply

Okay, so I've been dieting and exercising for a while and I noticed my stomach shrunk from 32" to 25" which makes me very happy (except for when I'm bloated...thats like add on 5 inches =P). However, my legs have barely lost any inches. They already have huge muscles but with the layer of fat outside my legs seem like a totally separate part of my body. If I continue to work out my legs they'll only get bigger so I was wondering what exactly I can do to decrease the muscle but mostly fat mass from my legs.

I have the exact same problem.  And it's frustrating, I know.

I've been trying to lose the fat around my thighs for years.  From age 4 until 19 I was totally into sports, so I had very large muscles.  In the years since stopping team sports, I know that my muscles turned to fat, but still, there remained lots of muscle.  I kept doing weights - heavy weights - and only became more frustrated when my efforts failed.

Now what I do is lots of rigorous cardio - biking everyday to classes and work, as well as 30 minutes on the elliptical - at low incline and resistance.  High incline and high resistance will only make the muscles grow.  Also, when I do weights every other day, I choose settings lower than what I can actually do, and just add more reps.  I do weights slowly and methodically.  When you pump your legs fast with weights, it only increases the bulk of muscle.  I want long, lean swimmer's muscles without having to enter a pool.  I'm getting there, because since starting this regime about 4 weeks ago, I've lost an inch off my hips and 2 inches off my thighs.

Good Luck!

cardio + patience = slimming.

Sorry I can't give you a better answer.  I feel your pain.  All I can tell you is stick with it and you'll see improvements.

I'm the same way, I have a tiny waist but huge thighs.  They say that belly fat is a lot easier to lose than weight bellow the waist . . .

I've been running and that has helped a lot, I read somewhere that running actually breaks down the muscles in your legs.

I find it amusing that had you lost the weight from your legs rather than your waist you would complain the other way, and if you lost an equal amount on both that you are not losing quick enough...

You can't spot target where to lose the weight from, and if it is muscle that is the issue..... Maybe you should try participating in sprints?

:)

I feel very confident in saying that if ladies built like this were switched over to how I am built (skinny legs and a big huge middle) they'd be crying for that tiny waist back! It's difficult to find pants because things slide down your hips when they are big enough to accomodate your middle.

All those cute little tops you can wear with a small waist? Forget about those! Also this apple shape some of us have is the most unhealthy shape, as well. Just thought I'd throw that out there so you can embrace your small waist as the gift that it is!
