Help Me Come up with a Halloween Costume!!!

Quote  |  Reply

so all the costumes in stores are WAY too short, and/or too expensive. i want something fun, clever, and not that common. and i'd like to make it myself, out of easily made or purchased items/clothes. i've been wracking my brain all month over what to be, and i haven't landed on anything yet. HELP!!!!!

I didn't know what to be for a long time either. I was going to wear this skeleton mask I have, but decided I didn't want to wear a mask all night. I just started looking around online and came across these vampire fang prosthetics and I really wanted them. I didn't want to be a vampire cuz it's pretty common, so I thought some kind of 'creature'. I also wanted a proper costume with blood etc, so I opted to be a recent werewolf victim who is just beginning to turn (so still 'human' but going to have claws etc).

So all I can suggest is start by thinking of one or two pieces you'd really like to wear and build on that.

i've totally tried that. i have bits and pieces for a few costume ideas, but i can't find the missing bits in any store. it's driving me nuts! then, i came up with the BEST costume idea (taxi cab), and i can't find any of what i'd need for that. argh!!

Sexy Construction Worker = Dad's Tool Belt, Hard Hat (buy at a store), Small Skirt, Tight White Wife Beater & Sexy Heals

A Candy Cane = Wear a red & white striped dress with cute white or red shoes (can easily be found at Target, Walmart, etc)

Devil with a Blue Dress = If you have a blue dress, wear it and go buy some devil horns and a tail...

Floor of a Movie Theater = Get a black t-shirt and a whole bunch of candy wrappers (preferably empty candy wrappers that YOU DIDN'T eat yourself, ha ha!) and glue, tape, pin them on your clothing, along with some pop-corn if you can and anything else you might find on a floor (this is if you are artfully creative! ha ha)

Michael Jackson  = Simply wear you PJs, get a long black wig and carry a baby with its head covered! ha ha ha!

A Major Flirt = Find some cameo clothing (a t-shirt you can make into a dress or something) and attach a sign that says MAJOR FLIRT... ha ha PUN INTENDED!

* I have more ideas if you want, but I have to cut this short because Desperate Housewives is on!! *

nice, gia! yeah, totally post some more ideas! i might do that devil in a blue dress thing. if i can find a blue dress!

I've been having this problem too.  It seems like all the not-uber-cheapo looking costumes cost so much D:  I really wanted to go as Daria this year but I can't find any boots that fit =/  My calves are unnaturally thick >_<

dude, mine too! autumn hates us.

I'm going as that pirattes of the carribean crazy voodoo lady, gypsy type dark clothing with blood and dirt, heavy eyeliner etc.  And I found some shrunken heads at the dollar store.

White Trash - Dress all in white and cover yourself with white plastic cups, plates, white crumbled up paper, etc.

Also a Jelly bean Jar, wear all white or black, cut holes for legs in a big clear garbage bag and tie it up around your neck after filling it with air-filled water balloons. A bow around the neck is cute, too.

how about a UPS Delivery girl...I'll take delivery ....lol...hahahaha Foot in mouth

I'm interested to know what you would need to make the taxi cab costume!  It sounds like a very interesting idea.

I dressed as a mummy a couple years ago and it was a very easy and cheap costume to make, I wore white long johns wrapped all over with several yards of gauze and creepy eye makeup.  But someone pointed out later that it might have been flammable especially at a party where people are smoking.

This year I am thinking of maybe going as an alien, where I could wear a colored wig and colored face/body paint, or as a teen werewolf but then I would have to glue on a fake beard which might itch.  Other easy inexpensive costume ideas are going as a greek goddess, making a toga from a sheet, and buying a headdress and wearing sandals, or poison ivy, buying some fake vines from the hobby store and wrapping/hanging them around yourself as a costume.

One of the best costumes I ever came up with was made from an old blue bedspread.  I made it into a long magicians robe tied around the waist with drapery cord with tassles. The magic wand was from a tree in the yard.  I wore a cape with deep hood sewn from cheap black lining fabric and the only other things I bought were some fluorescent stars and moons to stick all over the cape.  The hood came down over my face, so only a half mask was needed.

Start rummaging around the house, especially clothes in the backs of closets.

I just remembered another one that friends of mine wore.  He was a pirate in a frilly blouse, tight black pants with boots, bandana and hoop earrings.  She was a pirate wench and wore a sign on her behind that said We Don't Take American Express.

VISA?

amelia, for the taxi cab costume, i'd basically just need yellow clothes which i'd decorate w/ cab insignia, but they're hard to find now that the clothing season has changed! i've been looking online and in stores all last week and the weekend.

that's the problem, really. i don't have any old clothes to go rummaging through. i don't keep anything!

these are the costumes i've thought of and had to toss b/c i couldn't find what i needed:

  • sailor (i couldn't find a flattering striped shirt, or one w/ the sailor collar)
  • race car driver (couldn't find a non-male jumpsuit)
  • harry potter (WAY too short)
  • candy corn (can't find the colors)
  • geisha (can't sew, and the makeup/hair decoration is too complicated)
  • indiana jones (don't have a leather jacket)
  • freddy kruger (found the outfit, just cost too much)
  • totally wanted to do the greek goddess thing, but can't find a reasonable dress
  • statue of liberty, but the same deal as the greek goddess thing

i like the construction worker idea! all i'd need to pick up is a hard hat and a tool belt, which i just priced, and would be like 20 bucks. but keep the ideas coming!

All you need for the Greek goddess a loose white nightgown is some old curtains or purple cloth, draped and stitched in place, a piece of drapery cord to belt it, and some gold braid to wrap your hair.

i have a pretty cute purple dress that looks grecian, even though it's short. you think that'd work, like if i got the gold leaf crown for my hair, the drapery cord, and the sandals (which i already have)?

though i don't know. don't the dudes usually wear the short togas?

i also have a long orange dress that looks grecian. would it pass, with the proper accouterments?

Ok I'm gonna throw this out there but it seems like you may be too young to remember the show..Carol Burnett played Scarlett O'harra in a classic skit and she did the whole.. used the curtain from her window for a dress except she didn't remove the curtain rod...it was hilarious!! Her line was "I saw it in the window and I just HAD to have it"...you can make your own and can google it under images to see what it looks like...however if the generation gap will prevent people from "getting it" then it may lose it's luster...lol

i know EXACTLY what you're talking about!! that was hilarious!
