HELP - Weight not coming off

Quote  |  Reply

Hi my name is Danielle and I have been working out 5 to 6 times a day 2 times a week with a trainer and getting at least 3 of the days of weight training and than the rest cardio and I have been doing this for a couple months and the weight isn't coming off. I'm so frustrated I'm trying so hard I was 240 and got it down to 211 and just a couple months ago I went back up to 223 I want to get this weight off and would be happy with 1 pound loss a week but I'm not even getting that. I take anti depressents which I thought could be holding up the progress but I just don't know what to do. anyone come across this problem. please help!

What are your stats?  Age, height, ect.  How many calories are you consuming?

Have you been measuring your progress with a tape?

Never give up!

Have you been doing the exact same routine for a long time? Often is you repeat the same excersize regularly, your body gets used to to the motions and you stop reacting in the same way. Try to switch it up, use a different type of cardio machine every time or even use more than one per workout, also try to find some variations on the strength training you do like sitting on the bosu for some of it.

Also, how is your diet? Working out will do nothing for weight loss if you're eating back all the calories. Try and mix something up there a little too.

I'm 27 5'4 and 223 pounds. I started mixing up my work out doing step class, kick boxing, cardio machines and etc. just to mix it up and hopefully shock my body. I have also been doing a lot of weight training to get my metabolisim up as it's extremly sluggish. I have been trying to eat healthy and small portions eating every 3 hours but maybe I need more veggies and fruit and less processed foods.

if you work too much that can also keep you from losing weight..

Sounds like you're making the right moves.

Check out your calorie intake. It would be beneficial to do a little math -- using CC & keeping a food journal can be useful for this. Often times, the cause of plateaus are either (as mentioned before) a result of routine exercises, or not adjusting your intake properly. Sounds like you do a lot of activity, so the good news is you may need to eat even more than you currently do!

Just keep at it. You're doing the right stuff and have the right attitude. Your hard work will pay off sooner than you think.

Have you shared your concerns with your trainer?

I talked with my trainer and she is helping me the best she can. She wants me to stay away from carbs later in the day. I'm going to try and eat less carbs and more veggies and protein as I never really watch the carbs. how many carbs are we suppoes to have each day? does eating less carbs help weight loss??

Anit-depressants do make losing weight harder because it slows down your metabolsim..

I switched to Celexa from Effexor SR in April... I gained 10 pounds real real fast... I did some research and found that 8 out of 18 patients on celexa gain 10-25 pounds in the first month...  I read blog after blog of people complaining that they gained 30,40, 60 punds on Celexa.... I was on it only 2 months...

I had my doctor switch me again to Wellbutrin SR and started my diet....

I have been doing everything I can to speed up my metabolism like green tea capsuls and weight training just to rev it up. I'm now on Cymbalta which apparently isn't suppose to cause weight gain like the others but I guess I will see. I told my dr. I will give it a month or two and I will come off it if I have trouble. I think I really just need to watch my eating and not make bad choices I guess I thought with all the working out I was doing the weight just would have to fall off. boy was I wrong.

veggies are the good carbs. THey are absorbed differently by the body than say, a big ol slice of bread.

I have been on anti-depressants for ages and since starting have had trouble with weight - easy to gain, almost impossible to shift - even with very controlled calorie intake.

Your mental health needs to come first, so take it easy on yourself and talk to your doc maybe about some other strategies.

A support group like this is essential to tide you through those moments when you want to chuck it all in.

YOU CAN DO IT!

General advice when you hit a plateau during weight decline (and yours is a classic 10% or so loss) is get your body used to that new weight. Stop trying to lose for a while and increase your calories gradually to your burn rate. Get comfortable there for a while (I've seen 6 months of maintenance, actually but I am less patient than that), and then take another run at it.

As this is a calorie counting website, people will want to know how many calories you consume. If you do not know what that number is, then you can find it out by using the food logging tools on your account. If the number of calories is too low, many people will flood in to tell you to eat more. It is actually good advice. At "very active", which is the activity you describe, you should be eating about 1878 calories per day to lose about 1% of your body weight per week. However, if you have been restricting calories too much for too long, it may have negatively effected your metabolism. So how are you doing with calorie consumption?

my trainer thinks I may not be eating enough as well but I'm eating between 1500-1600 calories a day maybe sometimes a little less but I'm snacking and trying to get the right foods in. I don't understand how eating more is suppose to help. what am I suppose to eat more of? I'm trying to cut back on carbs as I love crackers and stuff like that for snacks so I'm trying to eat more fresh veggies and fruit.

 Food

thank you Clefairy have you been able to loose so far being on anti depressents? My Dr. switched me from Lexapro to Cymbalta hoping we can still control my anxiety but with out the weigh troubles she said Cymbalta is suppose to be one you don't have weight problems on. I have only been on this one for a month so I guess I will wait and see. thank you all for your support i can do this. we all can do this!!

According to the tools on this site, you are burning 2600 - 2800 calories per day.  A healthy deficit for weight loss is 500 to 1000 calories, with the higher number ok for folk with more weight to lose.  So, you should be eating 1600 - 2800 calories.

If you don't eat enough to fuel your body, your body thinks there's a famine, slows down your metabolism, and hangs onto every calorie.  So, in order to wake up your metabolism, you actually need to eat more. It sounds counterintuitive but it's true. It isn't the case that the less you eat the more you lose. You need to eat enough to fuel your body in order to lose weight.

Try increasing your calories to 1700-1800.   To increase calories, there are some good, calorie-dense foods with healthy fats like nuts and avocadoes that help. If you are weight lifting, it helps to get enough protein.  If you'd like advice on how to increase your calories in a healthy way, post what you eat in a typical day and folks will give you suggestions.

You can find the calculator at Tools / Burn Meter in the top menu. Enter your activity level to get a general number.  To get the most precision, enter your weight as sedentary, and then log all of your workouts. That will tell you what you are burning in a day.

Thank you!

I have a desk job so I'm sitting and typing most of the day but I do have to walk around but not as much if I was at home or etc.

here's what I eat

breakfast - 2 eggs and chicken sausage link or glueten free waffles with almond butter or special K protein ceral with soy milk

snack - fruit or veggies or sometimes cheese and crackers

lunch - chicken breast with veggies or spinnach salad with olive oil and lemon juice for dressing

snack - apple with almond butter or almonds

dinner - corn tortilla with lunch meat or chili or sandwhich or sometimes tomato soup

I'm trying to get enough water through out the day I think that's my biggest struggle

here's my work out Monday - step class or cardio on own 45 - 60 min

tues - upper body with trainer

Wed - boot camp -fully body weight training squats, lunges dumbells etc

thurs - kick boxing or cardio on own 45-60 min

fri - off day

saturday - cardio or powerflex class

Sunday - lower body with trainer

Yum!  That looks good.  Reminds me I need breakfast.  You might try adding some sesame seeds or olives or walnuts to your salad.   And perhaps more vegetables at dinner, for example broccoli or cauliflower.  Not green lettuce, that has almost no calories.  Also keep the protein in your morning snack.

thank you! does this look like enough calories?
