LOCKED TOPIC

Help MY weight is OUT of control! im fat.

Hi im 14 years old. 5'5.5 and 120-125lbs! I FEEL LIKE CRYING. Just less than a month ago i was 105lbs! How could i possibly have gained 20lbs this fast? My jeans are getting tighter, and i feel too fat to go to school. I feel like dying, if im going to gain this fast whats the point? HOW COULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED? I only eat 1000-1600 calories a day when i was 105 and i havent weighed myself in about a month but then i weighed myself today AND I AM FAT. I hate myself, now all of my hard work is ruined. It took me so long to get down to 105 and now its going to take me months to get back to that. Im crying right now, this is mathematically impossible to gain like that! But i have, i am cutting my calories starting today. I know teens are suppose to have 1500,, but i dont give a crap because the rule does not apply to me. If im gaining on 1500 im cutting down, not keeping at it and gaining more! Please some one i dont know what to do i just want to go back down to my normal weight.  i hate being at a bmi of 20! Im used to being under 18.5 and i feel so so fat lazy and ugly right now i dont understand how this freaking happened!

*sigh* where to begin.

For one, you aren't fat, you're actually at a low, healthy weight.

Seconly, you weren't eating enough. Don't give me that bull that 'it doesn't apply to me'. Grow a back bone and suck it up. You're only 14, you're still growing.

You probably don't realise this, but there are LOADS of girls on here who are trying to overcome eating disorders and your posts saying 'OMG I'm soooo fat! I'm 5'5 1/2" and weight 120!!!'. I'M 5'5.5" and I weigh 161 lbs. When you weigh that much, THEN you can complain.

Cutting calories at your age will only lead to problesm, for one, you could die. Yes, I'm not joking here. Secondly, if you cut too drastically, you'll end up gaining it all back, and then some- as was my case.

Seriously. Suck it up. You're fine. You aren't over weight. You shouldn't cut your calories, and no one is impressed that you ate 1,000 calories before. It's actually sad and pathetic reading this post because it seems like you WANT to have someone tell you 'oh, you're not fat! keep at it! you want a shoulder to cry on?'

So buck up and keep eating your calories.

Calorie Count will not support you if you wish to restrict yourself down to a weight that is unhealthy for your age and height. You are not an exception to the rule and the sedentary minimum for a girl under 21 is 1500 calories a day. Use this calculator for under 21's to work out your needs http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html as you are still growing. Yes, even in the later years - there's more going on inside of you that you simply can't see. You do not need to lose weight at your height, either.

Eating too low a calorie intake, or having a deficit from your BMR greater than 1000 results in something called "survival mode", where your body holds every last thing it can get in expectance of a famine. Water, food, calories. Explained:

  • Dieting & Metabolism - This article explains starvation mode and why undereating is counter productive.
  • The Body Neglected - This is what happens when you undereat for an extended period of time.
  • "Obesity on 700 Calories" - A tale of starvation mode's devistating effects, and proof you don't have to be underweight to be starving.
  • From Ask Mary, the segment provided by our CC nutritionist Mary Hartley: On the dangers of undereating and what it does to your body.

The physical dangers that come with undereating are numerous. You put yourself at risk of osteoporosis, of loss of fertility if you lose your period, hair loss, electrolyte problems, a weakening of the immune system, low blood pressure, blood disorders such as anemia, heart problems, and even death. The mental woes that come alongside can be just as devestating. Depression is common in undereaters, as well as distorted perceptions and problems like Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

You are describing a disordered eating pattern even if you claim otherwise and this is something you need to talk to your doctor about even if just to hear a professional opinion on top of CC. If you want some online support try http://www.something-fishy.org, and take a look through CC's Eating Disorders Health, Resources and Info Thread. But your most immediate concern is your health - and for that that means you need to talk to your doctor.
