Quote  |  Reply

I am  F , 5'0, 30yrs old and was 110lb (three pounds from my goal)a couple days ago and I had my wsdom teeth removed three days ago. First two days i only had protein shakes (with pb) and soup), a little applesauce and definately lower that 1000 cals -- i just couldn't stomach more food.

So i STUPIDLY get on the scale today and I am up to 114!!!! OMG -- i nearly cried. You have no idea how long it has taken me to lose weight -- how is this POSSIBLE??!!! I know i have not drunk near enough water than a typical day...but to GAIN weight?!

Please -- can someone at least give me some insight. Definately need to hear encouragment that this is going to turn around..today i am going to force myself to hit the 1200 mark...but i am so upset...please encourage me....aghhh!!!!

Ok you can stop panicking and take a breath and relax!

If you look at this from a mathematical standpoint you couldn't possibly have gained 4 pounds of fat by eating 1000 calories per day - its mathematically impossible as it takes 3500 calories to make 1 pound of fat.

You've been eating less than 1000 calories which is at least 200 calories less than your body uses just existing.  If you've been doing any activity at all you've actually burned more calories than 1200.  You'd have to have eaten 3500x4 above your daily maintenance level to have gained that 4 pounds.  Clearly you didn't do that so its not fat you've gained.

So the culprit is likely water retention.  Check out the sodium content of what you've been eating - regular PB and soup (especially canned) are extremely high in sodium.  Once you can eat normally get back to your healthy lifestyle (I don't know if 1200 cals/day is yours or if its low too - that would be based on your stats and activity level) and drink lots of water to help rid your system of any extra sodium it doesn't need (you do need sodium so you can't eliminate it totally - 2400mg/day is the recommended amount for an adult).  You'll probably see the extra weight come off in a few days.

Good luck and hope your mouth is feeling better soon.

You are so sweet! thank-you. I have been completely immobile and that is doing a mind game on me too (used to working out 5-6days a week - and now i can't do anything for 7 days.) I will definately increase fluids, increase my cal intake to fit 'sedentary requirements' ..and try to relax.

Sometimes before my period I can retain up to 5lbs of water, could that be it?

well - my TOM isn't for another two weeks..but all things are possible. it is especially hard because for someone as short as i am (5'0) it took months to just lose 10lbs..so to jump nearly 4 pounds is almost half-way BACK to my starting point. not to mention, i had been on a plateau for nearly 2months!!!!! I have been reading a ton of posts (since i'm stuck in bed!) and many suggest eating maintenance to break a plateau so i am wondering since i am being forced to not workout, maybe i should look at this as a "recovery" or "re-booting" break. Anyone every done this -- i.e ease up workout AND eat at maintenance...what were your results? or should i eat what cc suggests to lose weight at sendentary? (1200)... thus continue 'dieting' through my recovery?...

I think that's the right way to treat it..as maintenance and relaxing. There were times when I would go on vacation since I started losing weight and get really scared that I'd develop bad habits and gain weight in a week and then never lose again, but in reality, taking that time off really does re-boot you. You ease up on the exercise and laze around a little (we all like to do that at times!) and eat some things you'd never touch if you were watching..and then once that week is up, you feel a little different, refreshed I guess, but also you may see a weight change or something just because you're not used to it..and really by the end of your "easing" you're like pining to get back to your old routine and feel comfortable again..and you do tend to lose more weight! Especially when you see the little "vacation" changes going away, you get a renewed sense of accomplishment. So, I'd say, enjoy the break but just make sure not to let it break your good habits that work for you.

Your body just experienced a major trauma in addition to the change in activity level, your weight will fluctuate during this time.  Take care of yourself and let yourself heal, drink plenty of fluids, get your rest and eat your minimum calories.
