Hey all i wanted to have a regular fattening dinner tonight, will this make me gain all my weight back?
I have been watching this forum for awhile but finally decided to register the other day. I began my dieting and exercising at 260lbs three weeks ago, i am now down to 245lbs. Today i want to take a break and have some carryout shrimp lo mein, egg foo young, beef with broccoli and white rice in a larger portion than i have been eating the past three weeks. Will this ruin my diet and make me gain all my weight back? I also havent had anything but water the past three weeks and i wanted to enjoy a cup or two of kool aid or something sweet today. I will probaly still go ahead and jog my 2 miles nonstop like any other day. This will be just for tonight as a treat. Thankyou.
Thanks for the help and this forum definetly kept me going.
no, but the scale will go up 5 or so pounds from retaining water (chinese is salty). It will last maybe a week. As long as you stop at one meal, a splurge isnt going to sabotage your efforts.
it took me a while to reply because (a) this was in the lounge and (3) you said you haven't had anyhting but water for 3 weeks, but then I figured you just meant to drink, and I assume you are eating within calorie range and not being funny.
:)
good luck and enjoy!
just a suggestion - if you want to enjoy some things while dieting, maybe try to have them in smaller amounts but more frequently (once every two weeks? - you can decide what your caloric allowance allows). Also, with the kool aid, there are other amazingly tasting drinks out there that are light or low calorie and taste good - try em!
it's physically impossible for one meal to cause you to gain 15 lbs, but don't be alarms at all if you see a jump on the scale the next few days, chinese makes me gain temporary water weight like CRAZY.
it's ok so splurge now and then, and as long as you make it a treat and not a daily thing, you'll be fine. i also bet you'll be surprised at how much less food it will take to fill you up. when i get my old favorites now i am amazed and happy that i can't even come close to finishing things i use to polish off and follow with dessert!
You could always put some splenda or something in your koolaid instead of sugar and its instantly not so bad!! That's what i do. love it!
To gain one pound of fat you need to eat over maintenance by 3500 calories. For example, if your maintenance intake (to remain at the same weight) is 2000 calories, you'd need to eat 5,500 calories to gain one pound in a day. So no you won't gain much weight, though I would suggest eating a moderate portion of the food you crave, without binging.
I normally eat very healthy and stay within my caloric intake range 1200-1300, but was really craving a Bill & Bob's roast beef sandwich for a couple of days.
My cravings were so bad that I would open the fridge and pantry to just look at the food in there. I was feeling hungry and deprived because I really wanted that sandwich (I never eat stuff like that normally).
One night we decided to take the drive (it's an hour away). When we finally arrived, I was scared to order what I really wanted because I originally weighed 188-lbs and had lost 40 of it at that time (now, it's at 44-lbs lost so far). I thought I would gain a massive amount back just from this one (ginormous) meal...lol.
Not only did I order the Super Beef meal, I did not skimp on the sauce (I ordered it with extra) and I ate the entire thing...onion rings, french fries with loads of ketchup, onion roll stuffed with beef and dripping with sauce. It's food and does have some nutritional benefit, so I enjoyed it just the way I like it. It was GREAT and my cravings have not not returned since (that was on 6/16/09).
That one meal was 2-days of calories for me and high fat, sodium, carbs, etc. I had eaten normally that day before having that Super dinner and returned to eating normally the next day. I didn't increase my workouts because of the dinner--I did not budget calories at all. The next time I stepped on the scale, I found that I lost 1/2-lb and since then I have still not gained weight from that night.
My body must have needed the beef (I live on white fish, eggs, veggies, fruit, milk, brown rice, whole grain bread and oatmeal). I learned something very important about intense cravings--we have them for a reason. I was not craving junk (well, kind of) and I was only satisfied when I did have what my body wanted so much. Had I not indulged that night, I may have indulged in a gallon of ice cream (it crossed my mind often during those 2-days).
I say that if you really want it and you normally eat healthy and exercise, go for it!!! There's no reason to cut back or control your portion size for this special treat. There's no reason to budget calories for a one-time indulgence, either. ENJOY it and feel satisfied after having eaten it. As long as you don't make this a habit, there is nothing wrong with loosening your belt (lol) and it certainly will not make you gain back all that you've lost.
Really enjoy your dinner...and if you are wanting sweetened kool-aid, try incorporating sugar-free jello and Celcius drinks into your daily diet. You can even enjoy the jello with a healthy glob of Cool Whip (Fat Free).
