That sounds about right for a 2 lb weight loss weekly, but that's probably a little aggresive. I believe it's more about muscle preservation and fat loss that overall weight loss, and to do that you have to eat, basically.

Assuming he's only lightly active... say he gets half an hour of some kind of exercise each day... he could start the ball rolling with 2000 cals and be very successful.   If he's not active (and that would generate a 1600 target) then he needs to get moving!

thanks

when I started on March 30th I was almost identical in stats 38 yrs old 5'6" 196 and I am done to 167.4 (last monday checking in tomorrow morning).  I have a desk job and was not doing anything in terms of working out before I started.

I have been trying to keep my intake between the recommended 1450 and 1700 a day over that time.  I everynow and then drop to an unhealthy 1300 a day but usually the next day am up around 1900.

It has worked well for me so far but the other key is  I have added walking 25 - 35 minutes per day and doing much more outside activities on the weekends.

One of the other big things I have done is start to stand while watching TV at night rather than sitting down and watching it (especially watching baseball or other sports) may not seem like mike but it burns more and my legs seem stronger.

Hope that helps/

I am 36, 5'7" and was 200 lbs last November.  I decided to change my lifestyle a bit by lifting weights and playing basketball instead of playing computer games.  I am down to 150 lbs and maintaining.  I was eating between 1600-1900 calories a day.  I found out I could have eaten more(instead of feeling like I was always starving) because I can still lose weight with all the exercise I do while eating 2300 calories.  the whole key however is how many calories you burn compared to what you put in.  This website was a godsend for me.  It is essential you know exactly what is going in your body.

Good Luck!

i started off at that weight and around that height. the trick is to start high, and not go low. start him off on 2200-2400 per day, with exercise around 30 mins a day. that would result in around 1 pound a week, possibly 2, because he is new to training/weight loss. but slow and steady works best, lowering too much calories will result in slowed weight loss and stalling early. every two weeks lower cal by 100 , but only when weight loss stops, cuz if it aint broke...!

hope it goes well for him.

Tess,

It depends upon his activity level, but for me I set my daily goal at 1,900 calories.  I don't know if it helped me but I also set my carb goal at 150 grams per day.  As soon I started on that plan I lost 55-lbs in 5 months; a little over 2 lbs per week.  If he does want to count carbs along with the calories, I have a copy of the spreadsheet I use on my website available for download.  There is no financial catches or things to buy, I put it on there for others to use for free.  Check out my profile for the address.
