Hi,I have a fitness related question....Is it better to walk a slower pace for a longer time or a faster pace for a shorter time?I have a tendence to walk a brisk pace when I am starting on a new walking routine and then play out after about 15-20minutes.I can usually build up to 30-35 minutes after walking a few weeks.

Alison - I would have to say from all I've read - the faster pace will be better for you. In fact, there have been quite a few studies that show that doing a normal pace for 2 minutes, then pushing it hard for one minute (repeat as much as possible for a minimum of 20 minutes) can be more effective than a steady pace. Do what works for yur body and build up to it though.
For alisonpar;

And Viktor would be the best person to answer this, but in regards to your walking question it's really about getting your heartbeat up, whatever that may mean to any individual. For some that may mean when they walk 2-3 mph, for others 4-5 mph or more.

It's unique to a person, but get that heartbeat up girl, and keep mon truckin'
Like someone said, do whatever brings your heartrate up. On the other hand, if going briskly is too much, slow it down, you don't want to strain yourself. I would probably start slow and speed up. Like have a route, and walk it slow, and then over time try to see if you can do same distance faster. I feel that that is a better idea than going fast but trying to increase distance.

Hi I need help!!!!!!!!! This old gal aint what she used to be. I have aches and pains in places I didn't know existed. I need to loose 150 lb. By the time I get off work,my FEET, Back and Knees are rebelling. The thot of exercising is totally revolting. Some one suggested that I lose about 50 lbs first and then start exercising.

I had a torn left medial minisectomy done years ago that makes exercising hard, plantar neuromas on both feet add to the picture. I am determined to get this mountain of flesh to move yonder!!! Please, some one give me some sound advice.
Hi Viktor...wink wink...NO SUZZIE thats not a flirt....hi Viktor again....I hope that I can be a fitness freak too just like Eric said you were. I am trying to walk everyday (weather permitting) and I walk at a moderate to brisk pace. This is what I do. I walk for 30 minutes or 2 miles which ever comes first. I am setting a goal of 3 miles in 30 minutes does that sound realistic to you or is it too much. Thanks for being here. huggers (oh shhhh dont tell Eric and Igor but I have not yet tried hummus yet but it is on my shopping list (heave heave) huggers to you for being so motivated...WOO WOO
Nice to meet you Victor.
