High cal vegan smoothie/shake recipes?
I am looking for high calorie vegan shake/smoothie recipes. Preferably ones that don't require a lot of special/expensive ingredients.
i generally use any combination of almond or soy milk, banana, and any kind of nut butter. you can also add a sweetener like agave, and flax seed or protein powder (like vega or sun warrior), but these are a little more pricey.
some people don't recommend it because of the saturated fat (even though our bodies require a certain amount of saturated fats to function!), but coconut milk can also be added and i think it's delicious.
I love adding silken tofu to fruit smoothies; it's a great source of protein and really smooths it up.
Use full fat milk substitute products rather than low fat or fat free. A spoonful or two of flaxseed meal sprinkled in at the last minute will add the best kind of fat, fiber and calories. Don't put it in the blender because it tends to get gummy if mixed too much. Just sprinkled in, it isn't gritty and has a nice nutty taste.
Technically, when you start adding lots of non-fruit ingredients to a smoothie, it starts to become more of a "shake." Having said that, I often add Turtle Mountain's coconut milk ice cream and coconut milk beverage (instead of soy or rice milk) and cashew butter to boost calorie and fat content for my husband, who needs to eat more high-calorie foods.
Here's a recipe for a kiwi/coconut milk smoothie: http://good-life-eats.blogspot.com/2009/07/al oha-smoothie-and-vacation.html
I plugged the recipe into the analyzer and its around 400cals/serving.
They sugguest using 2 tbs orange marmalaide, but I would just put in more fruit!
