Too high of a deficit?
Hi, all. I have a question about BMR and the deficit. Here it is:
I weigh 221 lbs, 5'1, 23 yo @ a mostly sedentary (sp?) activity level. CC+ says that I should could consume 1750 cals/day w/a daily burn of 2440 cals. I've been working out every day for a total burn of 3090 cals. If I eat my healthy BMR then I'd only consume 1330 cals per day, bringing my deficit to about -1760. Is a 1700+ deficit too high if you're creating it with exercise? I'm really concerned about this.
I tried this theory earlier in the week. On one day I only consumed about 1400 calories even w/ a daily burn of 3100. I was 2 pounds lighter the next morning. The next day, I consumed 2500 calories and burned about 3100+ calories, and only lost one pound the next day.
Is a high deficit a REALLY bad thing?
Yes high deficit is a bad thing. You should not eat less than your BMR. You should not have a deficit of more than 1000. or it will put your body into starvation mode. Then if you do decide later to eat more healthy calories in a day you will gain weight cause your body will be kicking into saving everything it gets cause it is not sure when it is going to be fed again. Causing weight gain unitl your metabolism starts working faster from all the time you did not eat the calories you body needs. hope this helps
Also, if you are exercising enough to get your total burn up to 3090 cals, then the 1750 numbre CC gave you is too low. Don't let your deficit get over 1000.
So, I'll have to consume about 2100+ calories a day? It just seems pointless for me to bother with exercise if I'm going to eat back all those calories. If I just sit on my butt all day I could keep my deficit @ about -900. Plus, I struggle to eat 1500 calories.
This is so frustrating!
Yes, exceeding 1000 cal deficit is really bad - and not effective.
Exercise has other benefits, especially in terms of preventing muscle loss; try to do weight training replacing some cardio - you will burn less calorie and it will be better for keeping muscle.
i can tell you that i was working out every day and hovering around 1200 cal. i had too high of a deficit and not losing anything. i upped my calories to 1400 and went to working out 4 days a week and started losing like crazy. really, i think most of the time it's just finding what you body feels comfortable with when letting go of fat/weight.
