High Fiber Cereal

Quote  |  Reply

I was wondering if anyone knows of a healtheir alternative to high fiber cereals than All Bran or Fiber One.

I love them both, however I would prefer one with an alternative sweetener or no sweetener at all.  All Bran uses hfcs and fiber one uses asparatame- both not that great for you (or at the very least highly controversial.)  I'm not looking for sugar either..  Agave Nectar would be great.  I'm not so sure about stevia either.

Let me know!  Thanks.

I like Optimum Slim by Nature's Path.  It has organic evaporated cane juice and a little molasses in it, but it's really high in fiber (11g) and protein (9g).  It's also super yummy.  The total sugars are 7g per serving, which is lower than a lot of other cereals.

Oatmeal. Steel cut is very nice. High fibre, fair protein, can add what you want to it like fruit or nuts. :D

I just have oatmeal and sprinkle a spoonful or two of flaxseed meal on it.

All Bran with Extra Fiber has very little sugar.  I see from the label that it's .1 gram in 1/2 cup.

I like Simply Fiber cereal. It has no sugar and 14 grams of fiber for a 100 calorie serving. It's pretty bland-tasting though. With non-dairy milk and some cinnamon sprinkled on it, it's not too bad.

"Kashi Go Lean" (the one by Kashi Company, not the Kelloggs brand)

Tastes great.  High fiber, high protein, low sugar.  1 cup has 140 calories, only 6 grams of sugar, 13 grams of protein, 10 grams of fiber.  Very filling.

i didn't realize fiber one had aspartame.. :(

^ew yeah it does. the only item where aspartame doesn't stop me sometimes.

second steel cut oats, or add wheat bran to any hot cereal. simply fiber cereal is severly cardboardy though.

i would have to second any cereal from natures path, they are high fiber, organic, and free of too much sugar. Many are soy free and of decent quiality.

theres also a ezekiel cereal which health food stores carry, but its rahter bland like grape nuts, personally i find it alright. its a flourless and sprouted cereal, no sugar.

Agian, i wouldnt recommend cold cereal as a every day thing, i suggest you return to the soaked porridges of your ancestors.

(simply soak your oats/grains in half the amount of water, with a table sppoon of whey, butter milk, lemon juice, soy yogurt, something with cultured bacteria)

mix this warm water, and leave over night, on the counter, come morning, mix in the other half of water, and cook normally. It makes a pleasantly sour and easy to digest oatmeal ( all the protien and nutrients are very very easy to asorb)

grains contain phytic acid in thier bran coating, its been linked to rickets, bad mineral and protien absorbtion and its even been linked to blocking iron, calcium and zinc.  phytic acid is destoryed by old fashioned sourdough, sprouting and soaking.

DART-so i have terible trouble digesting oatmeal so i just stay away, what other grain/cereal would you suggest ?

thanks

Uncle Sam -- 10g Fiber, 7g protein, and less than 1g sugar.  I believe it's vegan, also (but confess to knowing nothing about that, so I could definitely be wrong).  It is very filling and great with fruit.

thanks COACH K-is that a hot cereal?  do i do the whole pre soaking over night thing as well? im not vegan so that doesnt matter to me.

No -- it's  regular cold cereal.  I'm sorry, agruskin, I was really responding to the OP -- I doubt this is a cereal that dartrinton would endorse (although I'm not clear where he/she got the info about whole grains being bad), it is a whole-wheat and flaxseed cereal.

Thanks for all your suggestions.  I am more inclined to eat hot cerial in the cooler months.  I'll check out the other suggestions.

In the meantime I have another question on a similar note

Trader Joes sells these small but super fiber-packed bran muffins.  They are unbelievably moist and super delicious.   Does anyone have a vegan recipe for something like this?  Anytime I've tried to bake muffins (and I'm a pretty good cook) they come out a bit on the dry side.

I don't know if Trader Joe's muffins are vegan our not..  I was not a vegan the last time my co-worker brought one in for me, so I didn't care at the time.

I do believe that some of Trader Joe's muffins are indeed vegan!  I looked once and I was pleasently surprised!

I know, I'm pissed! I actually just read that today. I also read that it has milk in it so I was pissed X2.

coach_k, i just have to chime in, i LOVE uncle sam cereal with almond milk....

Trader Joe's Muffins - The small ones that are like 80 calories with 13 grams of fiber ARE vegan (at least the ones here in Vegas). They're great, perfect for when the rest of your day is not very fiber packed. I suggest you try them. Especially the blueberry ones. The ones here say vegan on them and they are from like the Zen bakery or something.

AHHHH noooo :'( i'm going to have to find another rabbit-food cereal!

it does not have milk in it, i'm an ingredient-freak. special k does though, that's how it has so much protein.

I suppose I should have been specific...  I happen to have four diff types of Fiber one (and a couple varieties of All Bran).  Yeah, I'm a fiber freak!

F1 Original (my fav) has Apsaratame.  No milk, no sugar.
F1 Raisin Bran Clusters- Contains milk and 13g sugar per 1 cup serving
F1 Heart Healthy Blend- Contains milk and 10g sugar per 3/4 cup serving
F1 Caramel Delight - Contains milk and 10g sugar per 1 cup serving
F1 Oats and Chocolate Bars have 10g sugar, milk, and palm kernal oil

All Bran Strawberry Medley not only contains Sugar, HONEY, Molasses AND HFCS, but they throw in Sucralose (Splenda).  Why?  To ensure it's health benefits remain highly questionable?

Marketing folks, listen up.  We need a "no s**t" label for foods that don't have any chemicals, HFCS, and the like.

Thanks for pointing out the milk, Val..  I think you PO'd a bunch of people who were happily blissful!  Nice way to make friends.  I'm just kidding, but now I can't have the other types of F1 due to milk (I could possibly overlook asparatame or sugar).

But, Oh yeah!! Are those Trader Joe's fiber muffins AWESOME!!  Glad to know they're vegan.  Does anyone have a similar recipe for these?  I know some of y'all (ewwxro....) like to tinker in the kitchen.
