high protein bars...what are your favorites?

Quote  |  Reply
for meals or snacks??  I love these bars because I'm at school and I eat on the run a lot.  I need high protein because I never get enough

I used to stick to blance bars and zone bars but they started tasting too much like candy

recently I've moved on to odwalla protein plus and south beach meal replacement bars

what are your favorites?

I refuse to view them as a "meal replacement" bar.  Sorry, but cram as much protein as you want in there and there's no way a lil bar will be able to replace my meals!   On the other hand, they're great snacks!

I really like the balance gold bars, tho yes they do almost taste too guilty.  But even reading the fine print how they have balanced the carb/fats/protein in these bars.  Hense the name, eh?  I also like the Power Bar Harvests.  Some of them are more nutty like granola so that's kinda different at least from protein bars.  I've also tried the South Beach bars, and still nothing from the SB line has impressed me.  What a gimmic!  Same with the Special K bars.   Neither have a really great amount of protein and duh, there's only like 100 calories in them.  Gee, do the math.  There's not much room for anything in only 100 calories.

I've only had a few of the clif or luna bars.   They were good of what I had, but I still would like to try a few others.
I happen to be a student too and since I eat a 'mini meal' every 2-3 hours and have one class right after the other, it's impossible for me to sit down and have a decent meal, so I rely on protein bars, too!  My favorite is the Slim Fast High Protein Bar in Peanut Granola.  I just throw it in my backpack and eat it when I'm walking between classes.  I have yet to get sick of them, and in fact, I kind of look forward to eating them. I have a roommate who has a chocolate flavored Slim Fast Protein bar that she loves so I think most of the flavors are pretty good!
I've only had the chocolate chip peanut Odwalla but it was dang good (kind of soft like a cookie).

Personally, I'm hooked on Luna and Clif bars.  Both are excellent sources of soy protein, calcium, and vitamins.  Luna Bars also are low(er) in sugar than many (I believe they use rice syrup as a sweetener instead of a refined sugar) and evidently they're now "70% Organic" (there was a big sign by the Luna display at Whole Foods, haha.)  Lunas are only 180 calories I think and can satisfy a wicked chocolate craving.

I eat Clif Bars less often because they're higher in calories (250).  I usually eat them before I know I'm going to have prolonged strenuous activity - like going out to a club and dancing all night requires my "sober survival pack" of a Clif Bar and vitamin water :)
I like the pria vanilla crisp bar.  I use that as like a dessert and it kicks my cravings for a candy bar and gives me good stuff at the same time.
For a meal on the run I love a Harvest Whole Grain (i think?) Power Bar.  They are like 250 calories but they keep me satisfied for several hours between larger meals.  These have I think like 10 grams or protein or something ... a decent amount.

I like the Atkins High Protein bars...especially the chocolate peanut and the chocolate coconut bars.  They are 240-230 in calories but have 19g of protein and 10g of dietary fiber and 1g sugar.  Problem is they are a little high in fat ..8g sat fat and 2g other.  So I am careful with fat contents with my other meals.  They really hold you for several hours and satisfies chocolate cravings.  Two birds with 1 stone.
I love Zone and Pria bars. Pria's have less cals, so I tend to use those as snacks. I eat Zone bars as a replacement sometimes. Pria Mint Chocolate Crisp are devine.
I also love the Pria Mint Chocolate Crisp Bars.  They are 110 calories (28 grams) with 5 grams of protein and 1 gram of fiber plus they contain 23 vitamins and minerals (no evil high fructose corn syrup).
I like the Optimal Nutrition (ON) Protein Diet bar as a protein booster (not as a meal replacement).  These are 180 calories with 20g of protein, sugar free and 1 net carb.  They come in chocolate truffle, coconut, peanut butter and mint, all of which taste pretty good.
I like Balance bars because they don't mess up my analysis since they are perfectly balanced.  And they get an A.  And they are really good. Luna bars are great too.
Odd topic for today, I was watching Good Eats last night and the episode was Power Trip (transcript). Any way, the episode is about making 'energy bars' and has his recipe for making a protien bar

Now I've run this through our recipe anializer and using Proplus(?) soy powder came up with a bar that is 135 calories with 8.4 grams of protein (recipe here).
I eat luna bars. They are soo good and have tons of flavors so you won't get tired of them. They are actually one of my favorite foods and they're vegan!
Luna bars have sooo many tastes and all are good.

I also like Kashi Roasted Almond Crunch and Honey Flax bars.

Clif bars are the best tasting I've ever had.  Another that I found I like is the "Hooah" energy bar provided to the US military.  It's like a Powerbar or Balance bar, but I think it tastes a heck of a lot better.  But once again, you're back in the "candy bar" category.

For general nutrition value that doesn't just uselessly taste like a candy bar, I found something totally off the beaten track: survival rations.

I got a couple of packages of Datrex survival rations.  The 3600-calorie pack is intended as emergency sustenance level food for an average person for 3 days.  Inside the package are individually-wrapped bars made from basic ingredients like wheat flour, shortening, sugar, coconut, salt, etc. that are supposed to be okay for all cultures and faiths.  The texture is like a pressed bar of cookie crumbs with a rich, buttery mouth feel.  The coconut cookie flavor reminds me of Christmas cookies my mother made when she worked for a bakery when I was little.

Each little internal bar is about 200 calories.  The pack is designed to be easily subdivided fairly if necessary.

This is not high cuisine by any stretch of the imagination.  It is acceptable food, tasty enough that you won't cut your throat if you have to eat it and nothing else for a while, and balanced in protein so you won't get too thirsty digesting it (digesting takes lots of water) if water is being rationed.   If you want a snack bar that isn't all candied up, this couldn't hurt you, and they're inexpensive.  I've also got a case of "Seven Oceans" survival bars sealed in a go-chest in my closet.  They're similar, but a little cheaper, a little smaller, and not as well flavored.  No coconut -- they taste like a slightly coarse butter shortcake.

I have to agree with veganlove that Luna bars are my favorite...Chocolate Pecan Pie Luna bars are a force to be reckoned with...and they have lots of vitamins and minerals for women as well (and they are vegan-friendly)
i love the slimfast bars! they're SO yummy-specially the cookie dough one and yogurt raisin one!!!!!!!!! OMG great breakfast. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm and snack! ok now i have to go get one!

I don't eat meal replacement bars... have my own reasons not to do this, but I do eat snack bars sometimes, and my absolute favorite is Zone snack bar (not the large one!). 80 calories, 6 gramms of protein per bar and tastes great. Not so easy to find, although. :(
I also like Kashi Roasted Almond Crunch and Honey Flax bars.

Cool, I just bought that! Before that I usually have Cliff the granola kind, or Luna. Don't like the Atkins one, Pure Protein is allright but kinda feel like I am eating bubblegum :/ I tried other stuff too but not worth remembering coz they not good. :p
I enjoy the Big100 colossal bars.  32g of protein, 0 trans fats, 420 calories.  They a bit hard to eat cuz there's a crunch side to them but taste great and they advertise them as a meal replacement.  I have a hard time eating alot of anything so my calorie count is always low, this bar is 420 calories easy.
