High Protein, Low Cal?
I'm trying to beef up my protein intake, but since I've been laying off the Morning Star, it's been getting harder and harder, especially since I'm also trying to lessen the amount of calories I eat in a day [I'm 103 pounds 5'1" and I eat about 2000+ calories if i let myself].
Is there any quick food I can heat or make and reheat thats Veggie-friendly and high protein low-cal?
edamame! you can get it frozen and already shelled... just heat up in the microwave.... delicious. can be used in stri fries or just eaten as is with a little soy sauce. also amazing with couscous or quinoa w/ other veggies
I have found that one of my favorite pre/post workout snacks is a single vegetarian hot dog. I know that sort of edges back into the morning star stuff, but it is good portable protein... salty though.
i asked this question once i think and was told cottage cheese. it wasn't something i was keen on (look at it - all lumpy!!) but I've recently given it a go and LOVE it. its like sour cream and cheese in one! haha. try a baked potato topped with mixed beans in a spicy tomato sauce (more protien!) and the cottage cheese piled on top. lovely.
**edit: low fat cottage cheese - obviously. lol.
Use soy milk (high in protien) on a high fiber cereal like shredded wheat and heat. Shredded wheat is not very low in calories, but its not high and being high fiber, you do not absorb the calories as readily. Oats are also good, add Kellogg`s All-Bran Original Cereal or Buds for even more fiber. Cinnimon is a good way to spice up the flavour and not add calories. Use Stevia to sweeten, it is a natural sweetener with no calories to speak of, does not promote tooth decay, and fights type 2 diabtes to boot. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevia
try mori-nu lite firm tofu, or soft tofu, put it in a blender with a little water to make a pudding/yogourt consistency. add chocolate or vanilla protein powder and VOILA! u have a high protein, very little carb, fat free, desert-like breakfast.
i have this every morning with a little fiber one cereal, flax, and blueberries.yum.
You don't really need a huge amount of protein.
If I'm really on the low side (less than 40g/day), then I'll drink a Spiru-tein mix with soy milk. That gives you about 20g of protein for ~210 calories.
Mostly I don't worry about it. It's a myth that you need a huge amount of protein. Just about everything you eat (veggies included) has some amount of protein in it.

I really think that depends on the person. When I have more protein in a day, my workouts are a lot easier and better.
