High Protein Low Cal options
According to BMR/RMR Calculator I need a minimum of 105g of protein or 16.2% and I'm at 16% overall. I'm looking for some things that are high in protein but don't have that many calories so I can get a bit more if the day is almost over and I haven't had enough, but am really close to my Calorie goal.
Right now with that number I'm basically right at the minimum which I don't think is ideal.
Thanks for any input given
Also if someone could confirm that I'm thinking correctly on the exercise...its telling me that I should burn 1200 in a day in exercise in addition to my activity level? Or is it 1200 calories burned in exercise is 1200 a day?
Basically is it saying that very active is 1200 calories a day or that 1200 calories is what I should burn besides the very active?...I'm confusing myself I hope I don't confuse everyone else and so get no clue lol.
Fish, chicken and cottage cheese.
Beans are good too, but have a lot of carbs I think (whereas the other 3 are mainly protein) if that matters to you.
try turkey hot dogs, bean based meals, skim milk, veggie burgers, chicken breast
forgot egg whites (most of the calories are in the yolks)
Egg whites have the most protein density in terms of calorie. One egg white has 3.5 g of protein and only 17 calories!
I try to eat at least 90 g of protein a day so I find the best sources to be: cottage cheese (14 g/cup), plain yogurt (7g/cup), 3 oz serving of lean meat (ie: chicken, turkey, bison, beef have around 25 g each), eggs (6 g), oatmeal (oat bran has 7.5 g/half cup), various nuts (~6 g serving), soy or cow milk (~6-9 g serving), cheese (~6-9 g/ 3oz serving), tofu (~15 g/ serving), whole grain bread (varies).
I'm sure I'm forgetting some foods but that's a lot of it!
EDIT: I also occassionally eat protein bars, like Greens + brand, which has 14 g of protein and 190 cals. Almost every other brand of bar I've tried doesn't taste nearly as good.
Luna bars are also a good source of protein, if you need something to grab and go. They have about 9 g.
but I think most of those have been mentioned already! I'll keep thinkin...
Something else that's simple is whey protein powder... 90 calories or so for about 25 grams of protein. I like the chocolate flavored one mixed with ice and water in a blender with a half a frozen banana for dessert.
I just happened upon Kashi Golean Crunch it has quite the ingredient list its a nice big list. Looks like a good set of ingredients :)
Was at Sams and just happened to see it while looking for Fiber One in the Big box...sadly they didn't have Fiber One which is weird cause they had the Fiber One Bars but not the cereal.
They have it at my Walmart though so no biggy.
Try breakfast bars or cereal from fiber one.
seaweed. 1g protein for every 10 calories.
Egg whites, a someone else said, are also a great option.
Beef jerky is high protein, low fat, however it's very high in sodium. A small amount wouldn't be too bad for a protein boost, though.
are whey protein supplements out of the question? They seem to provide the most protein wild conserving calories. The shakes I make (either Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey or GNC 100% Whey) have between 120 - 130 calories and from 21 - 25 grams of pure whey protein isolate.
thanks for all the suggestions I wouldn't be averse to the shakes :) thanks
Boca (soy) products aren't bad, I actually really like the chick'n patties. And they have a lot fewer calories then a real chicken patty. Tuna with fat free mayo, mustard, and some salt and pepper. Soy pasta - tastes like soggy cardboard but is only 200 calories for 1/4 of the box and has 23 grams of protein per serving. Fat free lunch meats are also a quick, easy way to get in extra protein (unless you buy the super thin shaved kind, it usually has 5 grams of protein and about 20-30 calories per slice).
Is jump roping as good an exercise as running?
In terms of calorie burning, moderate jumping is about equal to running a 10-minute mile, although calorie burning is always a function of time... Read more
