High protein, low carb breakfasts
Hi all. I'm looking for high protein, low carb breakfast ideas. Right now my breakfasts switch between eggs and toast, and peanut butter toast. I'm getting overdosed on both!
Isn't toast high in carbs?
I like homemade granola with lots of nuts. Don't know if that is high protein/low carb enough for you, but as it's made at home, you can adjust the ingredients easily. I use a quarter cup of it on top of my bran cereal, personally.
You could also try ground turkey sausage made into patties, or crumbled and mixed into scrambled eggs.
And then there's protein powder mixed into milk and made into a shake. Quick and easy.
Hope that helped.
Greek yoghurt, it's very high in protein. If you get plain, you can control the amount of carbs that go in it. There are different kinds. I get high fat, high protein and one serving will satisfy for a long time.
To be honest, I prefer a whole grain for breakfast because it feels good and has fiber which also helps satisfy me for a long time. Bob's Red Mills 7 Grain cereal has (I think) 6 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein per serving.
My two breakfast choices are: Cottage Cheese or egg white, both are great with zero-fat turkey slices (cut up) green onion and tomatoes. Low fat, low cal and great protein!
I like having cottage cheese (aprox. 16 gm of protein for 1/2 cup and only 90 calories) mixed with 1/2 cup fiber one (60 calories, 14 gm fiber).
Also, you don't have to have "breakfast foods" for breakfast. What about last night's leftoevers? Or a turkey sandwich?
Leftovers. You wouldn't believe how happy I was to wake up this morning with left over BBQed steak. It was like heaven.
calorie for calorie, skim milk has more protein than eggs (about 8.5g for 1 cup milk (83 cals) vs. 6.5g for 1 large boiled egg (79 cals)) and almost three times as much as a natural peanut butter. Bonus -- easier to prepare than almost anything else out there.
Low-fat dairy (as mentioned here) is awesome for breakfast. It's so high in protien and low in carbs...also the higher fat versions will help you start the day off feeling fuller (though they are higher in calories, so watch portion sizes). I like Nancy's Organic Cultured Lowfat cottage cheese and FAGE greek yogurts...
I also recommend Flatout wraps - the light ones have 90 calories, 9 grams of fiber, and 9 grams of protien. I use them to wrap up a chopped "egg salad" with diced egg, cucumbers, peppers, and greek yogurt.
Raw Eggs and Peanut Butter mixed into a blender with pickle juice... very good for you... and if you don't like that...
Try a Chicken Breast with small salad - (I'm not kidding).
If you want "breakfasty food" - cottage cheese and 1/2 grapefruit - I know there's simple sugar there but - it ain't so bad in the AM...
If you want to try something completely different - skip breakfast altogether and go with 3 small snacks in the morning - a protein shake, apple, and yogurt - hi protein, fibre, and the sugars are moderate - and high in calcium.
Then there's always the pickle juice and egg white / peanut butter thing...
Thanks everyone. You gave me some great ideas.
