high testosterone?
Hey, I was wondering if anyone might know anything about a new med my doctor wants me to take. A little bit of my history:
I've always had low hormones, but it was never a big deal, I did have my period but not always regularly. I went on birth control a few years ago and that regulated it. I stopped taking it in August 06 and did not get a period at all until my gynecologist hormonally induced it in Feb 07 so that I could start taking birth control again. While I wasn't having my period I was actually at my highest weight ever, I had reached about 130-135 while studying in Spain. Last summer I started exercising more, restricting calories, etc...bad news. In July I was told I had high bilirubin by my gynecologist who had done some blood tests and she wanted me to go to a gastroenterologist, but i sort of disregarded this for a while until I started feeling really sick in August. I had no energy and a lot of stomach issues. I was already not eating much but the stomach issues sent it over the edge and restricted my eating even more from about September - November/ December. I went to several doctors and specialists during this time and no one really found anything but gave me some pain medication at least so that I started eating more by December. I had lost a lot of weight, over 20 lbs, and most of it I lost in about 2 weeks in September and just never gained back.
Around December I went to see an endocrinologist who found I had low hormones and an underactive thyroid. I think it was t3 and t4 that was low? I really don't know if this was a result of previous hormonal issues I had or the eating disorder I had developed. I think it was a combo of both. he put me on thyroid armour which I've been taking since then. I noticed that it helped with my energy levels at first, and I've also been truly working on recovering from the ed since then too and relearning how to eat. So physically I'm doing really well and I've gained back over 10 lbs.
I went back for a follow up blood test a few weeks ago and now he found that my testosterone is high and prescribed me a new medication. I went to pick it up and it turns out it's diabetes medication, called Actos. So is it me or does this seem crazy?? The doctor hasnt returned my calls for the last week, and the pharmacist says she's never heard of this diabetes med being used this way. the only other use she's seen has been to induce ovulation in women trying to get pregnant. She also warned me that the med might make me hypoglycemic. I still don't have a period but am not looking to get pregnant. And the list of side effects on this medication is outrageous.
Sorry this was so long! But if anyone knows anything about this please help me out!
anyone? or is everyone just as confused as I am...
*warning* I may have summarized your post incorrectly.
Call the doctor's office again and ask for the nurse to call you. Also ask how long it will be before you get the call. If the nurse can't answer your question, she/he will check with the doctor. Let them know you are not comfortable with taking the medicine because 1) you feel like it is not serving the intended purpose aka get you back to having periods and 2) with your ED history, you are concerned about the side effects, particularly hypoglycemia.
On your next visit, get the doctor to go through your history (will help if you've written it out). When they are having difficulty diagnosing, sometimes it helps to go backwards. Ask the doctor how sure she/he is of the diagnosis underlying your problem of not menustrating. There are other things they may want to check to increase the confidence.
I just sent you a message!
to get my period my doctor had put me on a diabetic medication called Metformin, thats used with pcos, poly cystic ovarian syndrome, i dont get my periods, and my testoterone levels are high, ive only been on it for about a weeek and he has me on half a pill a day for a week and then on building up to 3 full pills a day. But metformin is known to work with pcos and help me with the weight gain. ive never heard of actos, but wanted to let you know that diabetic medication can be used to help period and pcoc.
I was finally able to speak to a nurse who mentioned meformin too. It's basically the same thing as Actos but actos actually makes you put on weight among all the other side effects it lists. I think my doctor just wants me to put on weight unnaturally. That just makes me angry because he's will to put whatever crap in my body when I'm gaining weight on my own. I don't want weight gain I'm not in control of, or medicinially induced weight gain that would only go away once I stopped taking it. Plus my metabolism is already out of whack and I eat every 2 hours so the last thing I need is to become hypoglycemic. I opted not to take this and might look into hormones later if I still don't get my period. For now I'm kind of just tired of meds and want to see if my body will simply stabilize on its own.
Thanks for all your help!
