High-waisted women's pants

Quote  |  Reply
So after having the-lower-the-waist-the-better pants the past few years, the new high-waisted fashion is definately something new. And no, it's not just for older women - female contestants on American Idol have been wearing them, and even Victoria's Secret has made a pair! http://www2.victoriassecret.com/commerce/appl ication/prodDisplay/?namespace=productDisplay &origin=onlineProductDisplay.jsp&even t=display&prnbr=8K-213037&cgname=OSCL OALPZZZ&rfnbr=2419&cm_mmc=CA-_-Shopzi lla-_-CAREER%20PANTS-_-8K-213037

So what do you think of this new fashion? Personally, I think only a few people can make it look good. Otherwise, it looks kind of off. Then again, I come from the crack-bustin-outta-the-low-riders generation. :P

I love love love love high waisted pants...especially those......

aslong as you dont have the "mom jeans" type high waisted pants and style it with a nice shirt/blouse/ top then its all good.

just like super low waists, super high waists only look good on the very skinny.  just a little belly pooch and you will end up looking preggers....

personally, i dont like it.  ill stick with my nice normal jeans, thanks ;)

I personally love the wide leg jeans more tho.....

From my hips to the bottom of the pants is one straight clean line [= and doesnt make me so much of a pear shape hehe.
From what I've seen the past few years, it really won't matter if it looks good on people or not, they will still wear it, since it's the fashion :)

Personally I like the high-waisted look but I'm not sure I could pull it off...
I think they are cute and I'd like to try on a pair before I decide if I can pull it off- I have a daughter who's "all legs" and wonder what they will do for her - then I have another daughter whos quite petite and think she would have trouble with those??  But I am not very good at judging fashion on what might look good.  I too will stick with my regular fit waisted slacks for now.
The ones in the link look fine, though I agree they probably work best on skinny people.

I too think they only look good on really skinny people, otherwise you just get a big buldging bit below the waist xP

I just worry that people will wear them how they wear skinny jeans now, 3 sizes too small.  And then they'll look reeeally bad.  Why don't people just wear stuff that fits?  Everything looks so much better if it just fits properly.

yeah... they def. look better on skinny skinny people.  Also... tall people look better in them.

A friend and I went to the mall and tried some of the 'high waisted' pants on.  She looked gorgeous.... I looked ridiculous!!  the top portion of the pants pretty much came up to my neck!  it looked too weird!  I'll keep my low rise... not like I want to walk around with pants that make you look like you're wearing a turtle-neck  :(
i think tall people look better in everything. thats why everyone looks better in heels.  and why even plus size models are always very tall.  i don't remember if they ever show "petites" models but the clothing in that section always seems like a bunch of really ugly sweaters and floral prints...

i look ridiculous in anything remotely "high fashion" because nothing is ever cut right for my shape and stature, especially blouses.  i will definately pass on the high waisted stuff.
High waisted skirts are great on everyone and make your legs look longer, but those high waisted pants are not good! If you have short legs like me, it just accentuates them! not so much on the high waisted pants! Try the high waisted skirts, though. They are sexy!!
I think they're cute, but I know I wouldn't look good in them, same way I don't look good in the low waist style either.  I would practically kill for mom-style jeans that just kinda fit around my actual waist.  ('Course, I'm a middle aged mom, things are slightly thicker there than they used to be!)

I'm 38, so I think it's great.  A lot of women look good in higher waisted pants.  VERY few women looked good in those low hip-hugger things.  Guts, muffin tops, butt-cracks.  UGH.  It looked good on Britney in her prime and Shakira, but half the girls I saw wearing it  at the mall looked ridiculous.

When I was in my early 20s, women's jeans were higher and I thought they looked good.  I prefer seeing a bit of leg, like a miniskirt, etc.  Most women look cute in a miniskirt,

Anyway, here's one yes vote on the high-waisted pants!

I'm only 5'0" and my lack of height is all in my legs, only 26" inseam. I look good in high-waisted skirts and pants because they make my legs look way longer than they really are. It's all about proportions. But the trick is finding a pair that fits correctly, which can be a real challenge. I can't just take a regular pair of slacks, because they'll hit too high and be too full.

Low-waisted jeans, on the other hand, make my legs look too short and my torso way too long.

High-waisted never really went away, actually: I have two pairs of high-waisted slacks from Banana Republic that I bought about 4 years ago. They hit just above the waist, have no pleats, the leg width is not overly wide (falls straight down from the hip), and are quite flattering.

Anyway, I'm very much enjoying the fact that higher rises are coming back. Not just high-waisted: there are more styles now that hit just below the belly button, which is way more flattering on me than low rise. Yuck.

To avoid the mom jean look or the muffin top look, the trick is to have the waist hit you at the puffiest part of your gut. So if you're middle aged or don't have a perfectly flat tummy anymore, higher waist that hits right below or at the belly button to "lock and load" is great!!!

And I just want to add that there's much more to the "mom jean" style than being high-rise!!! Mom jeans are also lighter denim, have pleats, and taper. It's the sum of all that that makes them so awful on most everyone... not so much the higher rise.
I would practically kill for mom-style jeans that just kinda fit around my actual waist.

Megan, if you haven't shopped for jeans in awhile, I encourage you to go shopping now... there are tons of higher-waisted options out there at the moment!!! It's not all low-rise anymore. You may have to go to the better department stores and try on premium jeans, but they are out there! You can see my new jeans in my profile... they hit just below/at the belly button. While I am a mom but I don't think I look like I'm wearing mom jeans. ;-)
I usually think of mom jeans as the ones with the elastic waist :)
oh no, I'm out of touch.  Didn't know highwaist made a comeback.  oh rats, just when I was getting stocked up on low-rise undies.
Its about time higher waisted jeans are coming back in. I never really liked the low and ultra low waist look. I prefer my waist band to hit at least around the belly button a little higher is nice to. For most people their natural waist line is at or above the belly button.

Wow jenmcc you know a lot about jeans! I'm a shorty too but I look stupid in these trousers, maybe I just tried on the wrong ones. I agree with the tall people comment above and wish being short were more fashionable!

Well, I've got jeans that make it to my belly button, mostly.  But my natural waist is a bit higher than that and I'm constantly hitching up my jeans in a vain attempt to make them feel right.  HOWEVER, good idea about going shopping again, always looking for a good excuse and this is as good as any!

Doris, I know too much about fashion for my own good, LOL!

I am of the mind that you can look good in almost anything - provided it is tailored just right. For example, I always thought I couldn't wear tank tops, and then I discovered the trick is to find one that has a high armhole so underarm flab doesn't show. Little things like that make a big difference.

High-waisted can look quite stunning on a tall, pear-shaped woman. Accents the tiny waist, while downplaying the hips if the trouser legs fall straight from the hips. What you DON'T want, if you're pear shaped, is high-waisted with a leg that tapers in any way. That will make your hips look too wide.

High-waisted can also look quite stunning on a petite woman who's an inverted triangle or doesn't necessarily have a waist, because it will *create* a waist, shorten a long torso, and give the illusion of longer legs when worn with high heels and the hem just skims the ground. Trick with petite people is to get the scale and proportion JUST right.... you don't want to be wading in too much fabric...  which may take tailoring or endless trying on.

Since you're petite, I'll give a plug for Ann Taylor Loft. Try their Ann pants (dress slacks). They hit at the waist (right at the belly button), and are just-right full in the legs.
