Highest Protein for the calories
Does anyone have a favorite high protein, low calorie food?
In other words, what is the highest amount of protein per ounce, for the least amount of calories.
So far I've found that turkey has a pretty high amount of protein for the amount of calories, as does Tuna. Not tunafish from the can, but actual tuna steak, such as ahi, yellowfin. Salmon has high protein, but also high fat....the good kind of fat, but still fat, so I keep that to once a week.
So what are you choices for high protein foods?
The fat in fish is good for you though, so 2-3 times a week is ok, unless you're concerned about mercury content.
Eggs and egg whites are my morning protein go-to, as is skim milk. Ground turkey and turkey sausage is good too.
And if I don't want to cook, I just make a shake from whey protein powder.
Edit: and don't forget about boneless skinless chicken. Good stuff.
Cod, Prawns, Mussels, Pollock, Plaice, Flounder, Monkfish, Ling.. most white fish and also yes Turkey, how about smoked salmon? Clearly, I love seafood!
I love seafood too....could eat it every day.
Had shrimp tonight, mixed with chunks of tomatoes, orange bell pepper, strawberries, cantaloupe, hard boiled egg and all mixed up with fat free greek yogurt. It was delicious!
Sounds like one protein packed meal!! Good job!
Well I ADORE SALMON which happens to be HIGH protein (36 grams per 3 oz) & HIGH calorie... but the calories are extremely healthy because they are derived from the healthy fat that salmon carries with it! Totally recommended!
Check out this website though:http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutr ient&dbid=92
*My Fav's include:
- Venison, Yellowfin Tuna, Shrimp, Snapper, Halibut, Beef, Scallops, Turkey & Chicken Breast
Some hams have an attractive protein:calorie ratio. Check the label.
Boneless skinless chicken breasts, turkey breasts, bison steaks, fish, egg whites, cottage cheese.

I wouldn't call that "food". lol.
Was wondering the same thing, being a veggie, what the highest protein/lowest cal options are.

Tofu/tempeh/edamame/soy milk (soy bean products); seitan (wheat gluten or "wheat meat"); raw seeds (hemp, sunflower, pumpkin, etc) & raw nuts; whole grains, particularly quinoa.
If you're a lacto-ovo veg, add eggs, egg whites & dairy products.

I would hazard a guess at seitan (wheat meat). One serving of the "chicken style" that I buy weighs 140 grams, is 110 calories and has 20 grams of protein! A vegan's protein dream.
Plus, when it's made right, it is sooooooo delicious. Try it, if you haven't!

I don't know if this is true or not....but I was told by several people that the body has a difficult time digesting pork and can take 2 weeks to do so. I avoid eating it period ever since I heard that.
@folkharpist
I'm going to try that. I see it in our local Whole Foods all the time...will definitely give it a try.

Yes, people have been eating a product for millions of years that they can't digest...

.... and I'm going to marry Bob Dole and raise penguins in Guam.
Why are you trying to avoid dietary fat? You should especially be eating plenty of healthy fats in your diet. Low fat diets are not healthy and not productive for weightloss.
Fat free cottage cheese is EXCELLENT (1/4 c. has 35 calories and 7g of Protein).
Reduced fat or fat free tofu is also really good, with one ounce being about 35 calories and 7g protein.
Egg whites are the absolute lowest cal protein you can get--16 cals for one large egg white, with 4g of protein. That's because all egg whites ARE is protein, and one gram of protein=4 calories. 4g protein * 4 calories = one egg white! Try some scrambled with cheese and hot sauce, or soy sauce and green onions. mmm
Never said I was trying to avoid dietary fat...I asked what was the higest protein for the least amount of calories.
As I stated, I eat salmon, avocados and good fats. Simply looking for high protein.

I really like greek yogurt, mostly Oikos that is plain. I add a bit of cinnamon and sometimes a dot of raw honey. (Much sweeter than clover honey.)
Anyway, sometimes to up my protein count I add nori (dried seaweed) because it is 1g of protein per sheet. Each sheet is roughly around 10 calories and has 1g of carb. It makes an interesting flavor with eggs, tofu, fish. :)
