High Intensity Interval Training is a type of cardio. It can be done many different ways, sprints, bike, swimming and so on. The thing that makes it HIIT is that you go all out for 30 seconds to a minute. All out meaning for example if you are sprinting you are going at your max for that amount of time. Then you bring it back down, a recovery period of walking/running to catch your breath then go at it hard again. Do this for 20 minutes or however long you can stand it. So HIIT is simply the alteration between high intensity and low intensity training intervals.
You don't want to do HIIT every day. 2-3 days a week is enough for the average person. I alternate my HIIT days with my lifting days normally because both burn a lot of calories and keep burning calories for hours after if done right. But both require a recovery day or two in between to be completely effective.
If doing HIIT on a stationary bike do you keep the resistance level the same and measure expenditure of energy by RPM or do you adjust resistance and keep RPM the same?
