That looks like a beautiful place to hike in Boulder!  When I retire I will hike in Colorado often (I hope).

Meanwhile, still conquering the southern Sierras.  I did a doozie of a hike August 8 with a friend.  Lessons learned, for sure.  It was a Night at Motel Zero.

Moonduster, that is as badass as it gets without a bad outcome.  High five!  I'm sharing that story with everyone.  Very cool.

I finally started hiking again about a month back and am blogging it.  Here's the story from the first hike in Mt. Diablo Foothills to Castle Rock.  Saw what I thought was a bobcat but now I'm convinced was a small mountain lion.  Story and some pictures here.

Wow, Flatrat, that's a really nice blog and a well-told story!  I hope we don't scare away new hikers with our hiking tales Surprised

I'll be cheering you on to complete your 52 hikes in a year!!

P.S.  If you saw a tail, it probably was a mountain lion.  Bobcats have pretty short tails.

Thanks for the encouragement Moonduster.  If anything, more people will be inspired to hike after reading your story and seeing those pictures.  My hikes are lame and tame in comparison.

Most of my hikes are in the first three-four months of the year.  After that it gets hot and things taper off so I'm just hoping that by forcing myself to post something on the blog, I'll hike more.  Your hike stories/pictures are definitely one of the things that inspire me to keep going. Laughing

I'm certain it was a mountain lion.  Probably a smaller one.  It had a long tail, was brown in color and the ears were rounded.  No stripes.  The ears were not pointed like domestic cats of bobcats have.  I've searched pictures online and even saw a stuffed mountain lion at a museum last week.

Here are a couple of hikes from July.

I shall post the August hikes shortly.

Here are a couple of my hikes in August:

Nice hikes, Flatrat!  I couldn't see your Lukens Lake slideshow - it said owner removed it or made it private.  The shooting star photo was great.

When you said King's Canyon, I thought maybe you made it down my way to the National Parks, but it wasn't so ...  I don't envy you hiking in this hot weather.  I can get up high enough most weekends to escape the heat, at least for another 6 weeks or so.

I've been on a few more hikes but don't have the photos ready.

Thanks for the feedback.  You can watch the slideshow here -http://www.slideshare.net/52hikes/hike-2-luke ns-lake-presentation. ; Sometimes these sites misbehave. :)

I have been meaning to do some hikes in the Sierra Nevada but only after Labor Day weekend after which I expect the trails and parks to be less crowded.  It's a short window until the end of October but I should be able to get one or two in.

The weather here has been insane.  100 degrees in San Francisco on Friday and 105-108 in the East Bay over the weekend.  But today it's freezing.

Everybody I sent the link to Motel Zero hike loved it.  Can't wait to read more.

Hike to Inspiration Point - here.  Hoping to stretch my legs in Yosemite again soon. :)

At least you had some nice fog to keep you cool on this hike!   I could never function without my prescription glasses.  I have one pair of regular and one pair of sunglasses.  It's one of those items I triple-check before I leave the house every day.

Your hike to the John Muir house was interesting.  He is one person I would love to have met.  I'm sure he would not be happy with the way California looks these days.

Hey, are there any other people on this CC group who actually HIKE???  Where are your reports?  Hiking is the most fun way to burn a lot of calories, not to mention get in better shape.  Come on, people, start hiking and tell us about it!!!

I have not been keeping up with my photos, but last Saturday I hiked out of Horseshoe Meadow to Sharknose Ridge.  It was a nice area and it only rained and hailed on us a little.  This Saturday I'll be starting at the Whitney Portal and hopefully doing my first summit of Mt. Russell.

Yes folks, please post your hiking stories. I understand that writing or posting pictures from hikes is always tougher than hiking.  I'm always inspired reading or seeing pictures of hikes by other people.

I've learned my lesson about sunglasses.  This has never happened before.  I don't think I'm old enough yet to be this senile.  I leave them in the car always but lately I've been going on walks in the neighborhood park and sometimes leave them at home.

I'm sure Mr. Muir would not be happy with the state of affairs in California and our superhero Governor's plans to terminate many state parks.

Good luck with Mt. Russell.  It looks rather mean.  Meaner than Motel Zero.  I'll probably be doing some very tame hiking along Tioga Pass road this weekend.  Beyond that, I doubt I'll be able to hike in the Sierras this fall.  Most of the roads will close before my schedule will allow me to get there.

Story and pictures from one more hike in Yosemite (Gaylor Lakes) here.  This was more of a road-trip than hike.  Have two more hikes to post.

Very nice trip report, Flatrat, and gorgeous photos!  Sounds like you may have done more eating than hiking on this one Smile

I keep forgetting to post my Mt. Russell photos.  It was a blast!  13 hours, 6000 feet of gain.  We tried to repeat it last Saturday, but high winds kept us off the ridgeline.  We opted for its next-door-neighbor, Mt. Carillon.

More photos soon if I can stay awake long enough in the evening.  (This gets more challenging as time passes.)

My only weight loss news is that my body fat percent is in the 27's now instead of in the 28's.  It is a small improvement, but I'll take it!

Now that is a hike + something!  Those rocks look dangerous.  I bet there are frequent and unpredicted rock-slides on that mountain.

Yes, I ate more than I hiked on this trip.  But food, music and travel are reasons to live.  :)

I just finished an interesting book on survival called "Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, Why" by Laurence Gonzales.  Good one to read for all the outdoor types.  Amazon reviews here.  I also recently met Amy Racina who survived a nasty accident in Kings Canyon (near Tehipite Valley) and heard her amazing story of survival and rescue.  Her book is called Angels In The Wilderness.

Story and pictures from recent hike at Pt. Reyes National Seashore.

Story and pictures from my September hike in San Francisco from Sutro Baths to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Outstanding photographs!!  Really a nice hike.  If I get up to the Bay area anytime soon, I'd like to do that one.
