Hip Dysplasia and Swallowing Disorder?

Quote  |  Reply

My almost 21 month old, Savannah, was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at 9 months, underwent CR(closed reduction) surgery Dec 18, 2007.  She wore a spica body cast for over 6 weeks, and has been in a hip brace every since.  Just recently we graduated from wearing the brace 24/7 to at night only.  She was born with her left hip socket not fully formed, which was the primary cause of her hip problems.  As long as the socket continues to grow and progress on its' own, we won't need another surgery.  If it stops, etc, then she will need an OR (Open Reduction) surgery and another spica cast.   I'm praying this doesn't happen, but we aren't out of the woods yet. As if this wasn't enough, she was also diagnosed May 23, 2008 with a swallowing disorder.  She chokes and gags when swallowing thin liquids.  Currently we have to thicken all her fluids with a thickener (Simply Thick) to a honey like consistency.  We go back in December for a follow up for both her hip and her swallowing.

Well that's some background on my child I guess.  Anybody out there experience any of this type thing?

hi savannahgm, no i can't say that i have had that experience.  i have a 5 month at home,  i read this and it touched to know how blessed we are, and yes you are too,i know that it seems like one thing after another and i will keep you and your family in my prayers.  just keep trusting and have faith that it will all work out, whatever support i give i will.

Bless you and your family with all that you're going through, and good luck for the future. My son had a swallowing disorder from 4 months on to one year. We went to a Pediatric Gastrologist and they ruled it as acid reflux. He would get runny noses and gag/spit up constantly. I think we may be dealing with two different things but felt I should give you the heads up. Apparently, acid reflux for children is quite common. Hang in there, those little ones are so worth it.

How wonderful that she only needs the brace at night, now!  It's amazing what progress kids can make, isn't it?  Did she learn to walk with it, or is she learning now that it is off?

I was a speech pathology intern in a rehab wing of a hospital for several weeks, and I had to prepare the thickened drinks, and it was hard getting it just right.  I can't imagine doing it for every drink, all day long!

I so hope you get good news at her follow up!
