Hey Moms & Dads!  i am expecting a daughter soon and want to give her a "hippie" name.  I am not really a hippie but the name leans more to that genre.  I chose the name because of a song.  This song puts our life into perspective as far as the past 2 years (which were the roughest we've seen) and what our daughter represents.

I have an uncommon name: Rhiannon, and I LOVED having the name.  It made me feel special growing up and unique.  I didn't mind it when people asked upon hearing my name if my parents were Fleetwood Mac fans (they have a song titled "Rhiannon") or when my teachers started singing my name whenever they saw me.

My question is:  Do you hate having a "hippie" name?  What do you say when you tell people your name & they ask if your parents were hippies?  Does it bother you?

I do not have a hippie name but just wanted to say that I LOVE the name Rhiannon! It's one of my favorites! And I don't really think of it as that odd of a name.

Erica is certainly not a hippie name but I was the only Erica at every school I attended. I did like being the only one with my name because nobody had to call me "Erica K" or some other nickname (my husband was always known as "Bier" because there were so many Ryans...even his teachers called him Bier).

Anyway, growing up, I knew some kids with pretty unusual names and some of them really resented their parents for it. I dated a guy in high school that hated his first name so much that he went by his middle name. I have one friend who has named her daughter Bella Bloom and her daughter-to-be Joon (no middle name yet). She certainly gets the raised eyebrows when telling people their names. She's not a hippie but really toes the line. When asked how she came up with their names, she simply tells people that they're named after a relative. It doesn't bother her at all but her kids aren't old enough to understand yet.

One of the things that bothers me the most about having an unusual last name is that people butcher the pronunciation. I don't know why it irritates me so much but it does.

I'm not a mom or anywhere close to being one just yet, but I love nature names (which are sorta hippie-ish) like Fern, Sage, Lily, or Sky.

Heh, ok. I think "Rhiannon" came out in the late 70's :) I know a lot of people named Rhiannon. It's a pretty name, totally kosher. Rhiannon does not scream hippy. It screams "pretty" or "Fleetwood Mac" or, for some, "I can't remember the 70's"

I too have the name of a late 70's singer. Apparently in the late 70's-early 80's it was popular to name your child after singer/songwriters instead of a shrub or vegetable.

My step-cousins are Happy and Sunshine. Those are some seriously hippy parents. It's totally effed up. How are they supposed to be taken seriously when applying for jobs? Seriously. That is MESSED UP.

I am totally anti-hippy names, or any other type of name that could be traumatic or branding for a child. It's just wrong.

Fern is a horrible name for a girl. Poor, poor fern. Can you imagine? Fern. Jesus.

Apple? Eyrythwyenne? 5 names and a last name? WRONG! Just stop it!

In the 60s, I had a little friend whose parents were very much hippies.  My friend's name was Cricket.  Her parents named her that because they said when she was a baby she 'chirped' like a cricket instead of cooing like other babies.

I always thought that was kind of cute.  And she definitely fit her name!

Another 'hippie' name..... Tuesday.  As in 'Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday' by the Beatles.  Or 1960's actress Tuesday Weld.

I had a friend in high school named Rhiannon!  My name is Chrissy.  My parents were big Threes Company fans apparantly.  I'm named after a moron.  My mother wanted to give me a normal name-Nicole-but my dad was afraid that people would shorten it to Nick and that sounded too masculine.  Chrissy is cute when you're 5, but someday (God willing) I will be someone's Grandma Chrissy & that just seems wierd to me.

I don't have a very hippie name (I think - Maja), but I feel like I might turn out to be a hippie mum... I want to name a daughter either Ingalill (due to Swedish heritage), Celeste or Alvida. I'm also in love with Dahlia and Iris, but the man doesn't agree.

Pretty or hippie? :)

A friend of mine in high school had a hippie name.  Her first name was Araya, middle name Sunshine.  NO JOKE!  Anyway, the name really fit her.  She really was a ray of sunshine.  And people still ask her if her parents were hippies to which she replies, "they still are."  Name your child whatever sounds right to you.  It's a beautiful name by the way!  Congrats with the new baby!

Well both my children recieved somewhat unique names..

My daughter's name is Raven, middle name Elise

My son is Dante, middle name Valentino

I like all 4 names tebunie Laughing

My husband is part Latino but doesn't want any Latino names Frown  I love Valentina for a girl too!

thanks :)

I love the name Penny Lane.

^Heh, Almost Famous?

That's my dog's name. Actually, it's Peanut Pennylane. It's cute. You know, for a dog.

Happy, Sunshine and Destiny-- totally out.  Please dont let this offend anyone who has used the name (and I know of at least one who went to law school and was quite good at this so it doesnt hold true across the board) but the name Destiny to me is more trailer trash than hippie-- makes me crazy!

Indigo, Raine (rayne), those sorts of names-- I like that.  And isnt Fern a very old name?  Like old Kentucky/Appalachia rooted?  And victorian before that?  Like Flora was...  I guess I should look it up....

I like names that have meaning for you-- and really, what does it matter what we say?  My daughter's name doesnt particularily go with her last name, and my mom really hated her full name when she was finally named, but I think its great-- means spiritual life (and her middle name means adorned with beauty).  And now-- it suits her perfectly!

I think having a rare name is awesome.. My name is Rena.. not renee or anything of the sort and I love it... But i also love the names listed beloe Sky & Lilly are 2 of my fav's... Just do it! Tongue out your daughter will be greatfull you didnt name her sarah or jen.. something ordinary! I didnt have that opportunity not this first time.. being my boyfriends mom died of cancer at a young age.. so we named our daughter after her in a sense.. isabel Margarita...

ps:I love the name HOPE... my cousin has a real hippie name.. Rainbow Dawn... Its awesome

I certainly have a 'hippie' name, and I get asked all the time if my parents were hippies.  Each part of my name has a story, and it came together almost accidentally.   Miss CA 1974's first name was Summer, my dad loved the name, so it hung with him till I was born and I got it.  Dawn is a family middle name.  All of my girl cousins on my dad's side have it for a middle name.  Misty Dawn, Jacolyn Dawn, Renee Dawn... I happen to be the youngest, so I got it too.  And my last name is my last name, can't really change that.  Lets just say it goes with the nature/weather theme.

I've had all kinds of reactions to my name, from oh thats so beautiful, to what were your parents thinking, to isn't think that kind of a porn star name?  I agree with drea, pick a name that has some kind of meaning to you.

lol. My sister named had a dog named Penny Lane too... ha!

I don't have a hippie name, but just named my newborn daughter a somewhat "hippy-ish", or uncommon name: Willow Champion ___.

Champion is a family maiden name I always knew I'd use, and we love forests and nature, so it fits our style. I've gotten positive and negative feedback.....mostly positive and think she'll be proud of her name.

Hey, I know a Penny Lane. She lives 2 doors down from me. Her mothers name is Jenny Lane.

Just consider nicknames. My name is Erin so around every St. Patricks Day, instead of "Erin Go Bragh" (Long live Ireland), people say "Erin go bra-less" to me. It was totally gross when an old man did that to me. Ugh!

Other than that, I'm not really into hippie names. I like the strong sounding names like Jackson or Julie.

My eldest is named Jackson!  I did that 11 years ago (yikes!) when the name wasn't that popular.  Unfortuantely, people thought I named him after my appreciation for Michael Jackson!!  That is TOTALLY not the case and ruined any chance of me using my favorite "normal" name...Michael.  Ha!

My second son has an uncommon name.  It was my husbands first child so he was very picky!  Every name I suggested he turned down.  His suggestions weren't that great either...Rick, Soviet & Logan for example.  I liked Logan but when I found out that he picked it because it is Wolverine's real name it got a big X across it!  Donovan was the only name he said maybe to and since no other came close...voila! baby # 2 was named.

My daughter has a Hawaiian name (we're not Hawaiian but her Grandma did grow up there).  I changed the spelling from Kawaii to Kavai.  A co-worker had a niece with that named and I held onto it for about 3 years before I was able to use it.

This new baby will have more meaning behind her name than any of the other ones.  I hope she bonds with that whenever she doubts our choice.  Time will tell...
