Do you have a "hippie" name?
Hey Moms & Dads! i am expecting a daughter soon and want to give her a "hippie" name. I am not really a hippie but the name leans more to that genre. I chose the name because of a song. This song puts our life into perspective as far as the past 2 years (which were the roughest we've seen) and what our daughter represents.
I have an uncommon name: Rhiannon, and I LOVED having the name. It made me feel special growing up and unique. I didn't mind it when people asked upon hearing my name if my parents were Fleetwood Mac fans (they have a song titled "Rhiannon") or when my teachers started singing my name whenever they saw me.
My question is: Do you hate having a "hippie" name? What do you say when you tell people your name & they ask if your parents were hippies? Does it bother you?
Isn't Fern the name of the little girl in Charlotte's Web? Definitely pre-hippy and a lovely character.
When the time comes, I would love my kids' names to have references to nice children's books.
Just a random aside....
"kawaii" is also the Japanese word used to describe the maternal/parental instinct to protect the young and innocent. It's also been coined to describe the entire "cutesy" side of Japanese culture...from the Lolita babydoll clothing to Sanrio's Hello Kitty to those cute little seaweed faces on onigiri (rice balls/triangles) you see moms pack in their childrens' bento.

That is extremly awesome, MSN!!!!! Thank you so much! What a lovely & fun addition to explain my daughter her name when she gets older
. I think I did look up her name on myspace or googled it orsomething and I remember all these asian girls with the name but I didn't investigate further.
Thanks again!
My middle name is Echo, which I hated until about 9th grade. My parents were hippies, living in a pick up truck with a house built in the bed up in the White Mountains in NH when my mom was pregnant. My dad was yodeling, they were inspired, and thus my middle name. I am VERY greatful that my first name is Sarah.
I almost had a hippy name, my mom wanted to name me Jewel ( I am 24 now) but my dad didn't like it and she settled on Jessica.
While I don't mind my name there were always like four Jessicas in all my classes and I wish I had been named Jewel.
My parent's were/are total hippies.
I would suggest a total hippie name pared with a more known name.
My daughters names are Hava (rhymes with lava) Praisewater (family)
and Sadie Rose Elizabeth. My name is Hope Elizabeth and I LOVE it!
UPDATE:
While I am still gmae for the hippie name now I am unsure of ANY name. I started thinking the first name we picked didn't sound right so we picked a "normal" or more common name and now that doesn't sound right. Currently we have a list of about 6 or 7 names and we will just wait til she comes out. Whatever fits when we look at her will be the name. If we still can't decide then our 3 children will get a vote. Keep your fingers crossed that we get a name for her BEFORE we leave the hospital!!!!

Heh, ok. I think "Rhiannon" came out in the late 70's :) I know a lot of people named Rhiannon. It's a pretty name, totally kosher. Rhiannon does not scream hippy. It screams "pretty" or "Fleetwood Mac" or, for some, "I can't remember the 70's"
I too have the name of a late 70's singer. Apparently in the late 70's-early 80's it was popular to name your child after singer/songwriters instead of a shrub or vegetable.
My step-cousins are Happy and Sunshine. Those are some seriously hippy parents. It's totally effed up. How are they supposed to be taken seriously when applying for jobs? Seriously. That is MESSED UP.
I am totally anti-hippy names, or any other type of name that could be traumatic or branding for a child. It's just wrong.
Fern is a horrible name for a girl. Poor, poor fern. Can you imagine? Fern. Jesus.
Apple? Eyrythwyenne? 5 names and a last name? WRONG! Just stop it!
My name is Fern, And ive always loved it. Only thing i dont like about it is its tooshort. x
What if you gave the baby a normal/semi-normal first name and a weird middle name? That way when the baby got old enough, she/he could decide if she/he can handle being called Rainbeaux or Begonia or whatever.
You could say to the child that their middle name is their special family name that you chose especially for them, but it was up to them if they wanted to "share it" with the world. eh?
i named my now one month old baby girl pearl, i thought it was nice and "regular" but not common, so far the response has been 50% love it 50% repeat it and the spell it.. "pearl?! like p-e-a-r-l?", haha.
sorry for the all lowercase, i am holding my clingy pearl now while she hiccups. ![]()
My name is Rainsong, after the Led Zeppelin song. It my was my parent's love song.
Also Pearl is one of my favorite names. I also love Sabina.
RAINSONG, I think that is beautiful!! Especially because of the meaning. What an honor!! Do you embrace the name?
I went to school with a girl named Lovesong but no one really made fun of her name due to the fact that she had a "hunchback" issue. She is an awesome person from what I remember and her name fit her!

In the 60s, I had a little friend whose parents were very much hippies. My friend's name was Cricket. Her parents named her that because they said when she was a baby she 'chirped' like a cricket instead of cooing like other babies.
I always thought that was kind of cute. And she definitely fit her name!
Another 'hippie' name..... Tuesday. As in 'Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday' by the Beatles. Or 1960's actress Tuesday Weld.
I just have to mention that Ruby Tuesday is by the Rolling Stones, not the Beatles : )
i love love love the names Ruby and Rain. Others i'm planning on naming my kiddies are: Gael (boy), Anouk (girl), Luïc (boy), and Leaf (b/g).
I like the way they look and sound. Most of them are ethnically French/Spanish names, but i love the earthy texture each of them adopt when said aloud.

My eldest is named Jackson! I did that 11 years ago (yikes!) when the name wasn't that popular. Unfortuantely, people thought I named him after my appreciation for Michael Jackson!! That is TOTALLY not the case and ruined any chance of me using my favorite "normal" name...Michael. Ha!
Haha, I wanted to name my son Jackson, but we realized about a week before he was born that his name would be "Jackson Michael," since our last name is Michael. So we changed out plans last minute.
My boyfriend wanted to give me son an original name, but he wanted to be too original and give him a name that no one had (Friend or Satchel were his two favorites). His other top choice was naming him Townes after Townes Van Zandt. Fortunately, he felt bad after my emergency csection, and let me name the baby Elias.
My name, for a lack of better words, sucks, in my opinion. Jenalee, not a first and middle, just a first, in fact, I have no middle name.
However, when I gave birth to my lovely daughter, I hadn't been thinking names until I saw her and the first thing that popped into my head was "Sage". I tried researching other names and talking it over with her father, and that name came back stronger and stronger in my mind.
I can't imagine her being named anything else, it fits her so well, sound, meaning and being. <3
((Hippie names don't bother me as much as some...I want to say...'ghetto trailer trash' names... I used to know two girls, one named Ariel (little mermaid?), and, get this:
PRINCESS. Yeah, her name was Princess!
I've also seen Tequila, Spechelle, Webster??? lol! ))

Ariel isn't just a name from the little mermaid, it's an old hebrew name. It was also used by Shakespeare, in the Tempest. My late sister in law is named Ariel, and she was named well before the little mermaid came out. IMO, it's a beautiful name, and what we probably would have named my little boy if he had been a little girl.
I just heard a new one this weekend: Spring Frost (for a girl)

Wow, I don't think I have heard of another "Sage" before. My grandaughter is "Sage Seraphim". I also granddaughters Jasmine, and Chyna. My grandson is a little more traditional with Tyler.
I also have a niece who is "Thumper". This had been her nickname since she was fostered at ~12 months, and when they formally adopted her she decided she wanted it to be her legal name.
