Does hitting the trend line equal failure?
Asked by fjortis on Apr 20, 2009 in Weight Loss

Three times in the past couple months my weight has jumped up to the trend line. I know it doesn't make me happy, but is it a sign that I am not in control and my efforts to lose weight will fail?

Answer

Hitting the trend line does not equal failure!  The dotted green Trend Line simply shows the general pattern of your weight over time.  The Trend Line averages out day-to-day fluctuations, which are usually due to water weight. (The solid blue line shows your actual fluctuating day-to-day weight.)  To use the Trend Line, look at its direction.  If the trend is going down, you are losing weight; maintenance is flat and upwards is gain. The slope of the line indicates the rate of weight change, which could be too fast, too slow, or just right.  In general, it's best to have gentle downward slope indicating a safe rate of weight loss: 0.5 - 2 pounds a week.
