Hockey workout - advice?

Quote  |  Reply

I just got back into playing hockey after a 7 month layoff due to injury and am wondering what would get me back into shape fastest.

I've been focusing on an elliptical, varying speeds from 60+ revs to 30-40 to simulate rushes and floating around the blueline.  Foot in mouth

Then lower back strengthening as I'm hunched over quite a bit and shoulders for a stronger shot.

Any tips?  Thanks!

Congrats on returning to one of the best sports on earth!  Love my hockey! (I play goalie) .  But back to topic: It sounds like the elliptical is getting your cardio back up to snuff.  Maybe try to add some leg exercises that will work on your quads and hamstrings.  I would say walking lunges, walking or regular squats, step-ups and the like should help strengthen your legs and get them used to bearing more weight.

As you well know, hockey involves a lot of bending/squatting with the legs and a lot of leg power for skating, stopping, turning, and remaining low in your skating posture (keeping knees bent and not being straight-legged).  Of course core and upper body strengthening will be beneficial as well.  Your lower back idea is a good one; pair that with some abdominal work and you will have a nice strong core front and back.  Try to hit all the ab sections, lower, upper and obliques.

If your rink has public skating (not open hockey) I would recommend going to gauge how your progress is coming as far as being ready to compete in a game and also to help build the  endurance/work on the legs/brush up on skating skills.

Good luck, and have fun!
