18 holes of golf - 1000 calories??

Quote  |  Reply

I had a power cart for 16 of the holes and walked the last 2 carrying clubs (power cart ran out of power).

You think 1000 sounds right for 4.5 hours on the course swinging clubs?  If so I think I might take up more golf. haha!

TIA.

That sounds way too high to me - where'd you get the number?  If it was on CC I bet it assumes you are walking the entire time.  If it was from a HR monitor and your HR was relatively low (<100), then keep in mind they are not as reliaible computing calories burned when HRs are low.

ETA:  I'm not a golfer so it might just be more strenuous then I realize!

Yea I picked 'golf with power cart'!  Bizarre eh?

Meh, it sounds a little high, but not too much when you think about it.

The 1000 includes your basic metabolic calories plus the extra for the exercise - remember when you add it to your burn meter it won't add 1000 on, since you don't get to double dip. My daily base rate is 1800, so 4.5 hours of that (what I would have burned sitting on the couch) is 337.5. Subtract that from the 1000 and you have 662.5, which is still a ton, but remember again that's over 4.5 hours. Per hour, that's about 147 calories, which sounds like a more reasonable number.

It still sort of sounds high because a lot of that time is standing and looking, thinking and waiting for your partners to go, but it's not as crazy sounding as just the 1000 figure.

That does sound better - maybe I'll log 3 hours instead of 4 to bring my down to 700.  Good idea... thanks!

I agree I had thought the same thing when I was putting in my golf activity. Maybe they had a really really hilly course in mind!

Even if I cut it in half and log 500 I'm happy - I LOVE GOLF... I wish I could play more.

no way in hell you burned more than 100 calories over BMR each hour if you were using a cart.
