At-Home Body Fat Testing

Quote  |  Reply

I was reading a message board elsewhere and they were talking about this at-home body fat test.  I'm not sure how accurate it is but it seems to take into account your frame size.  It talks about the accuracy of the test on the first page. Here were my results-

Your Results

You have 20.7% body fat.

You have 26.3 Pounds of fat and 103.7 Pounds of lean (muscle, bone, body water).

I guess that seems about right. Probably a lot more accurate then the body-fat testing on my scale.  Anyway, just thought you guys might like to try it out. Anybody that has had their body fat figured elsewhere, maybe you can take it and see if it's the same.

hey I just did the test and got this result:

Your Results

You have 23.2% body fat.

You have 32.5 Pounds of fat and 107.5 Pounds of lean (muscle, bone, body water).

Which is not too bad but then when I tried on this website (http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/bfb) it said this:

Results:
your body fat percentage is estimated to be 24.37 % using the U.S. Navy body fat formula, or 33.31 % using the formula developed by the YMCA.

I have no idea of the accuracy of either of these though. I hoping the first one is more accurate :S

Thanks for trying it out. It's fun to compare notes!
I am tagging this...I want to try it when I get home. I recently bought an Accumeasure 3000 body fat calipers and I used it and got a result (a yucky one--and I am sure it's accurate) but I want to compare my results to those. Thanks for the link!
i use the body fat scales at home which give me about 24.5. i just checked this and it gives 25.5% which is 35.8lbs of fat :-( and 104.2lbs of lean, that means a 1/3 of me is disgusting wobbly fat. Do you think that its a little inacurate as it only takes measurements on the lower half of the body and i am most definately pear shaped so i have very little fat on my top half (and very little muscle i suppose to)

It tells me I'm negative.

Those sort of formulas really can be wildly inaccurate if you don't fit the model.

I thought it was weird that it didn't take into account height, waist measurements, or any upper-body measurements. So if you are top heavy--like I tend to be when I gain weight (all of my weight is in my belly and upper arms and boobs)--you might still be skinny on your hips and thighs and wrists (where you are told to measure) and it would give you the same reading as someone who is lean up top. Also, someone who has my measurements and is 5'9 as opposed to my 5'3.5 would have a lower body fat percentage than I would, I would think. But the test wouldn't be able to tell us apart.

Anyway, thanks for the link. I'm just always suprised at how little information these things take into account.

i just noticed you had a second link and according to that im super fit -yay - but clearly wrong - boo

Navy 18.99%

YMCA 14.04% - gosh im so tonned

the first At home test 25.5%

Thats a huge 11% difference,  i assume this is the diference between using my wasit which is only 25" and my hips which are a staggering 40"

oh i give up
My results:

Covert Bailey test = 23% body fat

Navy test = 43% body fat.

ummm errrrrr....

it's probably somewhere in the middle....I'm dumbfounded by the first result, particularly because it didn't ask for my height and my height is above average...and it still estimated my body fat too low.

Thanks for posting this.  I was just looking around for a skinfold caliper to buy.  I may buy the Accu measure one, but it says you shouldn't use it if you're obese, and 'technically' I am.

But then the "at home" one said 24%, 47.23% Navy and 39% YMCA.

WTF?

I'd say the higher is more accurate, because I'm fairly lean in many places (lower body) but I have a huge flabby roll around my gut.  Huge.  Flabby.  Gut.

Does anyone have a caliper such as the accu-measure (which measures one spot on the body and you can do it yourself) and how do you think it works?

-Lisa

LOL, I got 13.5%, and I'm borderline obese.
First HealthCentral link: 15.2%
U.S. Navy body fat formula: 14.57%
YMCA: 27.33%

Where does that leave me? I'm hoping the midde one's right ;-). I think the YMCA one is probably more like it, though - I don't really look fat but I'm sooooooo unfit ... so it would make sense that I have a highish body fat percentage!

Oh, well. It's fun anyway! Thanks for the links.

Interesting!

HealthCentarl puts me at 15.6%

US Navy: 10.33%

YMCA: 13.35%

csgnetwork ( http://www.csgnetwork.com/bodyfatcalc.html ): 9% (this seems very unaccurate though)

healthcentarl -

You have 20.6% body fat.

You have 12.8 Kilograms of fat and 49.2 Kilograms of lean (muscle, bone, body water).

csgnetwork -

21% body fat

Ymca- gave me a -6.75  % ?? what does that even mean ???

First one: You have 33.8% body fat.

U.S. Navy: 53.90 %

YMCA: 30.71 %

Here's to hoping the Navy is wrong :D

You have 16% body fat.

You have 17.6 Pounds of fat and 92.4 Pounds of lean (muscle, bone, body water).
