So this is my first year of college, and getting away from my parents has done me a lot of good. Yay for being (mostly) in control of what I eat. I've lost about 10 pounds since moving in August.

Well, the campus closes for the winter break, and I'll be moving back home for that time. I live in the dorms (no kitchen), and I have no desire to live off whatever I can microwave or buy at one of the fast food places surrounding the school. I'll be moving back in during the summer, too, though that is a bit further off.

I'm a little nervous about going back, afraid my progress will be stalled. Or, worst case scenario, I'll gain weight.

Anyone else in the same situation, with the same concerns?

YES - I'm afraid because my parents are overweight and they show their love through food sometimes. I'm worried that because I'll be home my mom will be cooking unhealthy meals and because I'm so homesick I'll just eat all the homemade cookies and pumpkin bread and everything else around.

Oh man, I'm REALLY nervous to gain weight because it's home and it's the holidays.

Would your parents be opposed to buying some items you like?  Maybe you could help with food shopping that way you could pick some things you want, and maybe do some cooking for the family too.  They may be pleasantly surprised by how healthy food can taste good too.

Exactly... there's no rule that says you have to eat what your parents do... or that you have to eat large portions... explain to them why it's important to you to have healthier foods in the house... keep logging your food, and keep the lines of communication open with your parents... you will find that living at home after being away is remarkably different than when you were there as a child... good luck!

It's normal for college kids to bring their new eating habits home for the holidays.  Your parents should respect your wishing.

i have that problem- they always have fam dinners and go out to din when im home, which is appreciated but i dont need to be eating 20 course meals for 6 nights!

also, i find b/c i am also homesick that i will use the food to comfort me becasue im home... ahh thats why i dont really care for going home. i love to be with my fam but not in that setting- let them come here to see me! haha

i'm a college sophmore and i was in a similar situation last year. i initially gained weight when i got to school like a lot of people do, not because i started eating junk but because of a less active lifestyle. i got mono the first week of classes so i was lying around a lot. i've always been a healthy eater but took a lot of time to assess my habits once i gained the weight and when i went home, my family was respectful and adopted a lot of the habits i have now. my mom lost 14 pounds and looks amazing. when i go home for breaks i usually do let my restrictions on less healthy food go a little bit, because i want to enjoy the holidays and you can't get food like that at school. enjoy your break, don't go crazy and have fun! good luck!

My parents buy healthy foods for me and I definitely ate healthy when I was at home too, I actually started this process at home so my mom always shops special for me. She actually asked what I wanted and I sent her a food list - I'm just worried about my own tendency to use food as comfort.

I actually might end up losing weight, who knows!

I too feel the same way!  I don't get to home very often, so when I do my family prepares a big feast or go out to eat.  My sister always wants to bake me delicious goodies because they are excited to have me home.  It breaks my heart to tell them I don't want it because they're doing it to please me, not sabotage.  So usually I give in and eat it (I'm a people pleaser Frown)  But I did recently have a talk with my mother about my concerns and she was completely understanding.

But yeah, it is hard to resist all the food at home.  Becuase you get in the mindset of being, oh this is break I deserve it.  Good luck to everyone over the Thanksgving and Christmas breaks!!

Fortunately, my mother shouldn't mind if I add healthy things to the grocery list as long as I eat them. There will probably be so much temptation around, though. Eep!

My parents are supposedly eating healthier and keeping less junk food around the house, but I've heard that before. I'll just have to do my best to pay attention to what I'm eating, make sure I don't fall into old habits.

I kind of expect exercising to be the easy part. We have a treadmill, and I certainly won't mind walking around town after being away. Hello, Memory Lane. Since I've been out of the house and doing these things on my own, I feel less shy about it now. I think I can actually tell my parents I'm trying to lose weight when it was just kind of implied or a bit of a secret before. And hopefully they'll be supportive.
