At home workout or gym?
I am trying to keep my lifestyle as cheap as possible due to finances, so I only have a gym membership for 2 days a week. The other three workdays I am "supposed" to do a tae-bo video or walk my dogs but once I walk in the door lazy-mode comes on! It is another $100 to up my membership to 7 days a week for the next 6 months. $100 is a lot of money to me right now, but I am willing to spend the money on it just to get into a regular fitness routine again.
OR I could just buy the tae-bo resistance bands for $15, and I would probably get more out of my workouts. Plus as the weather gets better over the next 6 months I could force myself to walk/run the dogs. I could totally just do tae-bo I am just worried it won't be as good of a workout as the treadmill or elliptical machine is.
Just wondering what everyone's opinions are... any 2 cents would be appreciated!

Over the years I have learned that I will not lift weights at home, so I have a gym membership and plan my workouts on the way to or from work or errands on the weekend.
It took me a while and spending some money to figure out what motivated me and what I enjoy. I no longer purchase at home equipment. I do have it available, and when it rains/sleets/snows, it is there for me, but do I use it? Very occasionally, certainly not my money's worth by any means.
$100 a month is a lot of money. I pay $29 for my Rec Center that has a gym, pool (lap and leisure w/spa), a track, weights, aerobics, spinning and more. (Classes are extra, but they are not what I need, so it works for me.) Most gyms have a month to month option around $30-$50 and the more exclusive ones are $100+. You may want to check around. The less expensive ones get the job done.

I think the answer really depends on how each of us is different. Going to the gym would leave me with lots of excuses not to go. Going downstairs and working out OTOH just happens for me. Even if I feel horrid in the morning I'll some times make time later in the day.
So are you the type that will more go to the gym? Or more work out at home?

Oh sorry, to clarify, it is $100 more total for the last 6 months of my contract. So that is $16.66 a month, but I would rather pay it all right now and not worry about payments. So it is cheap, just not as cheap as at home. (After my contract ends I am joining another gym that accepts my new insurance discount, total comes to about $12/month, yay!)
In answer to Zeke, I am more of a gym person. It can sometimes take a LOT for me to drive there and actually walk in the door, but once I am in the building I get really focused and just make myself do it.
Thanks for the replies.

listen to yourself....if you won't exerciese consistently at home but will go to the gym, i say do your best to find the $100 and up the membership. i prefer the gym over home because i never wimp out on classes at the gym (i don't want to be the ONE in the class who leaves part way through and i'm always afraid the instructor is going to think "gee she didn't like my class"). it's really up to you and whats best for you
I do the bulk of my work out at home. Please notet hat when you going t odo so, You better know the proper form and what to do on your own. Once you do, bought a resistance band or a set or 2 sets of weights, and you have a gym at home :)
In Baltimore I was a going to the gym 3-4 times a week person. When we moved to Anchorage I knew I was not going to want to go to the gym in below zero weather and snow. So I bought a treadmill. I didn't use it much at first. But now that I'm dedicated to diet and exercise, I get on it everyday and also do a pilates video a few times a week. If you really want it you can do it.
Does sound like you're leaning towards the gym. So just shell out the dough. You're worth it.

I would love to own my own treadmill, but for now, I have a gym membership. Actually, I have two: one in the town I work in and the other in the town I live in. My work gym is a YMCA and the YMCA in my hometown doesn't have a pool. I need to swim. Plus, I use the treadmills, tracks, pools, weight lifting equipment, et al at both facilities....AND I workout 6 x a week. I need a gym. I just don't get a good enough workout at home...too many distractions.
Something I do to avoid the "walk in the door lazy mode" is walk after work before I come home. During the school year I go to weight class 2 days a week and aerobic class the other 2 days these to are after work. This also helps me "destress" from work and not bring the work stresses home with me.
Another thing I do is wake up early and work out before getting ready for work.

My wife and I tried the at home gym and treadmill but it rarely used for more than a day or maybe 2 a week. It wasn't the best but for some reason what sounded like a good idea never played out.
We are also a little tight on funds but this actually helps use because we don't want to speed our money and not go so it gives a little push to use what we are paying for!!
