I hope I do not have a problem...

hey i am 19 yr old female 5'2 and 110 pounds, i eat about 1500 to maybe 1600 calories,I think. some websites tell me i should be eating 2000 calories, but I think i would have to stuff myself to get that much, i know there is a healthy weight range for me, so maybe i dont need that much, anyone else feel like 2000 calories is a little ridiculous..because i do...i would probably have to eat more on purpose to get that many calories in my diet what you think~erica ps. I eat more during the weekend, especially saturday cause my fam has lunch together..so im not trying to eat less thats just how much i usually end up eating. oh and i posted a food forum on how much food i ate today.

Do you have a history of undereating?  Have you dieted to get to this weight?  This puts you on the low end of the BMI scale, but still within a healthy weight.  Is there any particular reason that you ask about a problem?

1550 is a the minimum recommendation for someone your age and height to maintain if they're sedentary.  kidsnutrition.org

What do you eat that adds up to 1500-1600 calories in any given day.  Do you get any exercise?

hey smwhipple (great name:)) i used to be 95 pounds but that was when i was still growing. and i used to only do stuff like soccer and contortion gymnastics stuff like that, then i started going to the gym, and started running, and doing cardio, i used to actually do more cardio then i am doing right now. i cut back cause i heard to much cardio is bad for you, so now I am doing cardio 3X a week for 20 minutes(interval training) and strength training with my own body weight (pullups pushups ect.)..and strteching/contortion(which dosnt really burn alot of calories. the rest of the day i havnt been doing much of anything. another thing that changed was i used to eat a smaller breakfast and bigger lunch, now I eat bigger breakfast and not as big of a lunch. I just hate eating more because why should i eat all that food if I am not hungry for it? any advice will help, ~erica ps i didnt diet to get this weight i do eat healthy though my highest weight ever was i think 115 lbs.

i don't see your post about what you ate. if you didn't diet to get to your weight, you're not suffering from an ED, and you're not trying to lose weight then what brought you here in the first place. We welcome you but I feel like you're leaving something out.

1500-1600 is not enough period. if you're eating a balanced diet, then it's really not hard at all to eat 2000 calories.

i guess i brought myself to this website to maintain, I am also trying to get stronger, i used to be able to do 11 pullups but i stopped for a while now i can only do 5. the reason I wonder is because i got love handles (not huge) and i have a butt and if i am not eating enough how can my body maintain love handles dosnt make sense...or nice curves(since im short i have curves) if i am not eating enough why is my weight always 110 like all the time?~erica ps if i do have a disorder it is undiscovered i am a health nut tho

often times we lose muscle mass when we don't eat enough. it sounds like that might be the case for you since you can't do pull ups anymore. just because you're eating less doesn't mean you lose fat, in fact people lose a large proportion of muscle if they undereat without strength training.

i said i can't do 11 now cause i stopped doing pull ups consistently, and i can still do pull ups just not as many, also i dont have that much fat and i still have muscle i mean i have curves but its not like im fat~erica, ps i got love handles i suppose from puberty its just natural i guess

I was able to do pull ups until I developed breast and hips, the extra weight makes them much more challenging.  Of course, now the lack of muscle mass and even more weight adds more difficulty to it.  Undecided

Your definition of love handles seems unlikely given that you are at the low end of a healthy weight.  It's much more likely that what you're viewing as love handles is part of a naturally curvy body with hips.

2000 cals is not ridiculous for a young, active woman and it's easy to get that amount of food if you add in a few small things..... a tablespoon of olive oil (120 cals).... an ounce of almonds (150 cals)..... half an avocado (150 cals)....  an extra dry ounce of pasta, rice or noodles (100 cals)....  really simple.

The reason you don't lose weight on 1500-1600 a day is that your body has got used to being mildly malnourished on an ongoing basis.   This is affecting you at the moment because you're finding your strength is reduced.  Over the long-term you could find that this low-level malnutrition starts to affect your immune system (you catch more colds), or you could become anaemic, or you may find your periods become irregular... all kinds of minor niggles that can build up to something more serious in time.

I'd suggest you sketch out a meal plan for yourself for tomorrow based on 2000 cals.  A 400 cal breakfast, 500 cal lunch, 600 cal supper and 500 cals-worth of snacks in between, for example.   A 400 cal breakfast could be 2 eggs poached (140) on 2 slices toasted wholegrain bread (160) with 100 cals of orange juice to drink.... very light.  If you can see you're falling short of the target, you can make the adjustment before you start the day and not at the end.

Good luck

i don't think that 1600 is super low for someone who is 5'2 and 110lbs. I am also 5'2 about 110lbs and i maintain on 1600. That feels like an appropriate amount for me and if I forced myself to eat more I put on weight. As long as the diet is balanced and includes whole, natural, clean foods I really don't think there is a problem with this.

1600 isn't low for maintenance, if she does nothing but sit around watching TV all day.

hmm if my immune system is so low, why have i not gotten any colds at all?, and actually i do sit around all day, except for when i work out, haha or if i am with my freinds hanging out, i know the FDA says i need that much food, but don't people in other countrys get away with eating less then americans, and i don't see them being so malnourished. I mean if I am not hungry, does that mean my body is not burning at that rate of 2000 cal a day? i dunno im just staring to think the fda is wack~erica By the way, do you guys really count your calories and if so are you really eating 2000 a day?

Yes, I count my calories.  No, I'm not eating 2000 cals a day, but I'm 29 years old and I'm trying to LOSE 30 more pounds.  So I'm eating 1600ish to LOSE WEIGHT.  If I were maintaining, I would be eating 2000 cals/day.

2000 cals isn't a lot of food.  It really isn't.  You don't have to eat much more than you are to get from where you're at to 2000.

Read the advice given, take it or don't.  But don't keep arguing with everyone who's given you advice.  They're not going to change their advice.  You're either going to follow it or you're not.  19 years old is still a teenager as far as your body goes.  You burn a LOT more calories doing nothing than a 30 year old would.  Whether you believe us or not.

Hear, hear!!  I'm starting to think this is just trolling...

Agree with the others that you need to eat more.

I also think that if you think 2000 calories is "ridiculous" you have pretty warped perceptions of what a normal diet is and need to really rethink your food philosophy.

Thinking 2000 calories is ridiculous is much more ridiculous than eating 2000 calories would be.

Stop getting your information from "I heard" sources and check out some real information on nutrition and exercise.  Every time I "I heard" is used as a factual source instead of the 2nd or 3rd or 15th hand information/misinformation it is some poor sucker somewhere believes it and perpetuates the bs.  Every played telephone?  Perhaps that's not something for the youngsters, but we used to take a sentence or a story and pass it around as a game to see what would happen.  You'd start out with a couple of pieces of info and by the time it made it to the third or fourth person, even when they were trying, it was significantly altered.  That's exactly what happens with "I heard".

We called it Chinese Whispers. Why Chinese, I have no idea... probably not the most PC name in the book.
