HOT DOG? Help!!

Quote  |  Reply

So I want a hot dog! They say the Hebrew National 97% Fat Free ones only have 50 calories so why do they get a C? Do you think a hog dog with a whole wheat bun would be a bad choice, the meal would be about 250 calories?

What I ate today:

Breakfast-

Slim - Fast Shake - 190 calories

2 tbsp trail mix - 150 calories

Lunch

Slim - Fast Shake - 190 calories

Half a Turkey Sandwhich on Wheat - 120 Cals

Snack

Popcorn (airpopped) 100 Calories

Dinner

Low cal hot dog - YES OR NO?

Well, let's see - 250 calories from the hotdog + roll would bring your daily total up to 1000, which is still too low for the day. So you are going to need to find something else (hopefully some of it will be nutritous) to get you to at least 1200, if not more, since unless you are very small, even 1200 is too low.

And seriously, what's with the slimfast? You need to get some REAL food in your day. The only thing that is worth anything is the half turkey sandwich, and maybe the trail mix if it was just simple (natural) nuts etc.  Oatmeal, a whole turkey sandwich, and maybe some chicken and veggies are going to do a lot more for you than any of those "nutri shakes"

Sorry to be harsh, but look at what you are eating - this should be about being healthy, not just picking the lowest cal options you can find!

Last I checked slim-fast was an A on here. It has tons of Viatims, even if I ate "real" food I wouldn't get as many viatims. Plus I have a major sweet tooth, it is the only thing that keeps me from eating a box of choclates and a dozen mini doughnuts!

Amethyst is right. Go ahead and eat the hot dog - depriving yourself of the things you crave will just set yourself up for a possible binge.

P.S. Add some veggies! Carrots, celery, whatever. You could use the vitamins and fiber.

Yeah... the ratings on CC+ are kinda bull - they are only based on the vitamins, I think, but really don't give a good idea of how good for you things are - there is more to nutrition than how many vitamins there are.

Fruits can cure a sweet tooth, and I eat a few semi-sweet chocolate chips whenever I need chocolate.

And having the majority of a meal because it cures a sweet tooth just doesn't sound like a good idea. Sorry to rain on your parade... I just don't think what you are describing sounds healthy. And since that's what this site is about, I figured I'd share my opinion. You can take it as you please.

I can tell you what is unhealthy, not having enough calories in your diet, or  eating things like deep fried snickers bars or 10 cup cakes. Slim-fast, although it may not be the best thing on the planet for you, is not unhealthy! Just because you have to eat solid food to feel satisfied doesn't mean the next person has to. It has calories, it fills me up, and its keeps me away from sweets! I pair it with other foods and I'd like to think my diet is pretty balanced. I hate veggies so that is the only thing i'm missing. I'm not on here to knock other peoples dieting ways and I don't think you should be unless you read about someone sticking thier finger down thier throat. You say CC is kinda bull and then say "Only healthy things should be on here"... GUESS WHAT CC SAYS ITS HEALTHY AND NOT YOU!

I like Slim-Fast.  I have a box in my closet and drink it from time to time.

And seriously!  If you want the hot dog, go for it!  Hot dogs are yummy, and you'd STILL be under your limit!

The amount of calories has little if nothing to do with the grade.  It's graded on overall nutritional value so the lack of vitamins and nutrients is going to give it a lower score.  You shouldn't worry too much about eating foods with a low grade as long as you're eating a healthy, balanced diet.

That said, why so few calories?  If that's a normal diet for you, you need to re-evaluate.  Slim-fasts can make an ok supplement in place of the sweets (I have one for an afternoon snack at work) but you still need to be eating a diet filled with fruits, veggies, and other good stuff.  What is your daily calorie deficit?  If it's over 1000 calories (which it likely is with that few calories being consumed), you really need to up your intake.

You are saying that not having enough calories is unhealthy- so why are you doing it? Eat more- have your slim fast if you want but have some fruit and vegetables for goodness sake. You get PLENTY of vitamins from fruits and vegetables.

The CC food grades are meant to be used as a guide.  They are not a judgement about the number of calories.  Read the whole nutritional page of your item to learn why it gets a lower grade.  One of those hotdogs has a whopping 400 mgs of sodium, and the nutritional information on the label is very sketchy, so the grade is low because there is not enough data to compute.

I know a hotdog now and then is tasty, but they are such junk!  I had only one this entire summer season because I really wanted it and it smelled so good on the grill.

I love hot dogs too, and I only eat those hebrew national fat-free ones.  They even keep me away from buying commercial hotdogs when I'm out and about (those would be disastrous for the calorie count) because I know I've always got good ones at home.  Sounds like you can afford to put two franks in yours, or even have 2 dogs, so go for it!  You could also jazz it up with steamed onions or fresh tomatoes and lettuce.  It'll make it even more awesome, you'll make your 1200 cal minimum, and you'll be getting some of those veggies you're missing out on.

Agreed with the veggie suggestion.  I try to incorporate "color" into my food- greens, yellows, reds etc.  While I don't follow that rule everyday, I don't see many "fresh" items on your list.  I mean I guess they aren't necessary per se to lose weight, but they'll make your insides feel much better

Sunbeam makes a light wheat hog dog bun that is like 70 calories.  So that plus your hot dog would be 120.  Have two.  The lot grade is probably mainly due to high sodium content.

I saw you said you hate vegetables, and you profile doesn't say, but are you an adult?  or even a young adult?  it's time to grow up and choke down a veggie here and there.  I'm not a huge fan either, but I manage to eat some veggies, and find a few that aren't bad.  A mix or peppers and brocoli, cauliflower, carrots grilled up is pretty good.  or some green giant boil in bag stuff.  they are seasoned and pretty tasty, and only about 200 calories.

The daily intake you gave shows little other fiber and no fruits or vegetables, plus the total is like, under 900. It looks unhealthy even though the specific items on it may be healthier choices than lots of others. The food pyramid is such an excellent guide---and because fruits and veggies are low in calories and high in so much of what our bodies need, you can just add them to your usual items and get to a much healthier total.

Good luck.
