I've seen folks here refer to using HRM to track calories, or calorie loss, I think. I I googled this, but can't find out what it is. Can anyone explain what this is?
It's a heart rate monitor. Some can be worn on your wrist, some have a chest strap. If I remember correctly (and what I read was correct), the ones with the chest strap are more accurate.
Just to add - not all track calories burned - some just tell you your heart rate. I think the Polar HRMs are considered the better ones for tracking cal burn.
The ones with the chest strap give provide instant and real-time results because it's tracking your actual heartbeat and transmitting it the wrist-watch unit. The ones that you wear on your wrist only generally require you to stop for a moment, put your fingers on the contacts on the watch and then it gives a reading.
I do not use the HRM (Heart Rate Monitor) to calculate calories burned. I have the Garmin 405 GPS watch. I have the chest strap HRM. It constantly sends the HR info wirelessly to the watch. I download it to my computer. Then I analyze it to study my effort level (HR) at various points in my run.
One guy in my running club uses his as a warning device. He has had heart problems. He sets his to trigger an alarm when his HR exceeds a certain level ... and he then backs off the pace.
HRMs are used for many things.
Thanks, everyone - very helpful!
