HRM interference question.

Quote  |  Reply

I have heard that with some of the cheaper HRM there is a chance that the reading will be affected by machines/other HRM. I work out at home so my HRM cant pick up other monitors, but I was wondering if any other machines (my HRM watch or treadmill) could affect the reading of my HRM.

Probably not - unless there's undesired crosstalk you shouldn't see any effect. Some treadmills can pick up the signal from your HRM chest strap and use that to give you a more-accurate calorie burn - and your watch kinda has to pick up the signal from the chest strap to function at all :)

The only interference my strap HRM would pick up is in one area of the neighborhood I used to walk thru - one guy had a ham radio tower that I think made my monitor act funny  - I had problems with my XM radio on this same stretch of road so there was something at that house.  Also heard the house was a meth lab- but since the folks got evicted havent' had any problems with any interference with any machines- I don't worry about cross talk at the gym because no one else there uses a HRM.  My encoded strap broke a long time ago so I use just a cheap strap with no problems and the machines pick up the strap with no problems- now if you are using a strapless model I have no idea

My HRM acts funny around computers and large power lines.
