HUGE setback.

Quote  |  Reply

Hey everyone,

the past few months have been ridiculous for me. I really fell of the wagon and have gained a good 20 lbs back from where I was which is just incredibly upsetting. Ontop of that, I just started the depo shot (birth control) and I had read that weight gain is a side effect of going on that. I was also told by my doctor a week ago that I have hypothyroid problems and she wants to start me on medication, which can in turn, aid in metabolism boosting and weight loss (supposedly). I've been trying really, REALLY hard to get back into the swing of things but I have zero motivation and zero self control it seems. Any support or insight on any of this would be much appreciated!! I'm just kind of at wits end, and sadly, disgusted with myself.Frown

If you have an underactive thyroid, you can't blame yourself for weight gain! The medication will help and that in turn should motivate you to carry on

As for depo, personally, I didn't gain weight with it.

We all leap off the wagon, I'm just crawling back on to it myself. I think it is best not to give yourself a hard time and start again.

Best of luck and big hugs!

One can't blame their underactive thyroid entirely though: you would never be able to get started.

All it takes is a strong start.  Get the meds, and do it.

I went to a quit smoking clinic a few years ago.  They explained that the statistics show that while the clinics increased a person's chances at stopping smoking, the odds were still against everyone in the room.  Rarely do people stop on the first try.  However, each time a person stops smoking, the odds get better and better that the person will not relapse.  That was true for me.  I quit two or three times after that stop-smoking clinic and now I'm off of the nicotine for good--smoke free for over a year and I have no desire for a smoke.

I think changing our habits and our health works the same way.  The change won't be "permanent" the first time we try it.  As soon as we recognize that we've fallen off, we need to restart.  And restart.  And restart.  Eventually we will acquire the new habits.

Don't give up and don't let you mind psych you out by blaming the depo or the thyroid.  Let us know how you do.

Also, maybe start with small steps...jumping back on the wagon full-force might be a bit daunting.  So if you choose one thing to start with--diet or exercise--make small changes each day with that chosen start.  Start with a walk for 10 or 20 minutes a day, and then slowly increase each week.  Or swap one unhealthy food item for a piece of fruit or vegetable every day.  Perhaps easing back in would be more manageable than trying to change everything at once.  Then, once you conquer food or exercise, work on the other.  And certainly getting the meds should help!  Good luck!!

I love what mamarose said!  And I think she is right.  Everytime you fall down you are gonna be stronger when you pick yourself up!

I have hypothyroidism and have been on medication for over 2 years.  Getting on the meds was a life saver.  I think more clearly, I am able to motivate myself better, but it's still hard work to lose.

My advice is to keep CC and lose slowly and just keep picking yourself up and moving forward!  Good luck!

i fully agree with sojirosmum i also have underactive thyroid...i've also been trying really hard to lose .....the only way is to keep tyring n above all be positive .....

Hi :)

Well I have no words of insight with the thyroid problem, but I do know what its like to start a new method of birth control and be told it might make you put on weight! All I can say is, until your body adjusts to it, your hormones will be a little crazy. If you're an emotional or comfort eater, this is what makes you over eat during this time and put on the weight. That's why (in my opinion) some people put on weight and others don't - it depends on your relationship with food. Try to do as much as you can to de-stress for the first few weeks while your system adjusts itself, take a bath or go for a walk instead of reaching for food. It helped me alot :)

Everyone goes through periods of not being motivated. I know it sounds corny, but print off a picture of a body that is realistically attainable for you and carry it around. When I lack motivation I hang a dress up on my kitchen cupboard door, so that every time I go to reach for something to eat, I have to look at the dress and think about how I will feel if I go to put it on and its a bit snug. Everyone is allowed to fall off the wagon every once in a while, you'll pick yourself back up. You just need a bit of a nudge :)

Best of luck!
