Hula Hooping
I just purchased a 3-lb hula hoop (from ebay) and it's suppossed bring results if I do it just 10 minutes a day for two weeks. It's so heavy and the radius is so HUGE that I think it'll actually work. If not weight loss, it'll be a great core work out once I get the hang of it.
I wanna find one of these locally. Shipping is expensive.
Plenty of fun ones.... Maybe buy a plastic fun one, and tapes weights to it? *helpless shrug* *grins*
:)
I bought one of these a few years ago at a street festival -- I should try to find it. I remember seeing it when I moved to VA last summer.
It's BIG. It's a 4-pound hoop; the weight comes from water. It's quite easy to get and keep going. It hurts, though, and I don't mean muscle soreness yet; I mean the actual weight of the thing going around the waist! Oof! There's one spot in particular that consistently hurts when the hoop hits it.
I suspect I'll get used to it/get better at keeping it off that one spot. I've not done it for more than two minutes at a time; I started with 30 seconds and am working my way up slowly, as someone else had suggested.
shakti, if your friend doesn't mind letting us all know, I wouldn't mind knowing how to make one!
also, Hooping.org is a treasure trove of info.
I sense a new hobby coming on. :)
Edited to add: Wow! Really, thanks for that tutorial site! I like to give toys to my friends at our Christmas brunch (I give their children toys, too, of course!), and hula hoops are a great idea for this season!! Oh, I can see us all out in the yard now after brunch hooping it up!! lol!!
I'll have to remember to take pictures!! :-D
Haha! Much better than crocheted potholders!
I started giving the adults toys the year after I gave all the kids Chinese yoyos (in addition to other things). The adults were playing with them more than the kids were! Oh, everyone had fun with them! They are a great stocking stuffer, and a good office toy, too. Play-doh, yoyos, touch-a-bubble... these folks like to play. :-)
So this year, all adults and kids just might be getting hoops at brunch; I hope the weather's nice on brunch day!
The lightweight kid hula hoops are the best because your own body has to maintain motion for the hoop to go around. It also feels better on the middle because it doesn't dig into your hips. But through personal experience and other sources, the less weight, the better. It seems as if it would be the opposite, and that's what companies are banking on.
I haven't gotten a hold of my friend, sorry!
Do you think this is a good form of exercise for someone over 50 who has 40lbs. to lose? I do yoga 2 x a week but I need a lot more. I just don't know how to gain the core strength I need to have really good form while exercising, etc. I've tried Pilates several times, but I just feel hopeless at it. Pilates classes demoralize me.
Hula hooping seems like it would be fun and would really help develop my weak core. Thanks!!!!!!!!

For any women (or men) out there: Has anyone every had success with hula hoop exercise? I've been doing some research on hula hooping and it seems to be a growing exercise industry.

Its funny you mentioned hula hooping... my friend has been doing it for a month and has lost over ten pounds... I was amazed
I am so glad you posted this, I would have never in my wildest dreams thought of hula hooping as a form of exercise... I am definitely hopping on this bandwagon!
Does it work as well as crunches for abs? I despise doing crunches... Would I be able to use this as a successful replacement?
