For any women (or men) out there:  Has anyone every had success with hula hoop exercise?  I've been doing some research on hula hooping and it seems to be a growing exercise industry.

I just purchased a 3-lb hula hoop (from ebay) and it's suppossed bring results if I do it just 10 minutes a day for two weeks.  It's so heavy and the radius is so HUGE that I think it'll actually work.  If not weight loss, it'll be a great core work out once I get the hang of it.

Wow I never thought of hooping I did it as a kid and loved doing it I could go for hours then, now maybe not as my little belly might get inthe way but if it will help work it off Ill get me one again my grandaughters will love it... Does anyone know if Walmart sells them yet?
GOOD ONE willow! I like that! I could never hula hoop. They never stayed up! Is there a trick to it!
This sounds like a lot of fun! What do you think about this site? http://www.sports-hoop.com

I wanna find one of these locally. Shipping is expensive.
I really want one of these but I live in Germany and I can't find the weighted ones here. Any tips. The shipping from US to here is 30$. I am going home for a visit in November I can order one then, but I would like one sooner. Maybe someone has bought them in the UK?
Hi..... Having trouble sourcing in the UK also I am afraid :(

Plenty of fun ones.... Maybe buy a plastic fun one, and tapes weights to it? *helpless shrug* *grins*
www.magichoop-de.com- This is the only one I found be it does not look as good as the ones as www.sports-hoop.com. Maybe I have to bring 2 or 3 back with me for the US.
elizabeth, that one looks pretty neat if you ask me! As soon as I have a little extra room in the budget (just bought a car, have lots of start-up expenses) I'm gonna get a weighted hula hoop of some sort. Just seems like too much fun to pass up.
I was wondering what all the hoopla was about....

:)

I bought one of these a few years ago at a street festival -- I should try to find it.  I remember seeing it when I moved to VA last summer.
My friend custom makes them. I'll have to ask her how she does it. It's really simple; she found a website that tells you how to make your own hula hoops, so she went to Home Depot, bought the materials and sat out side making them for my family and friends. It took like five minutes per hoop, and it was super cheap. You all can either search how to make them, or wait till I talk to her again and find out. Good luck~
I ordered mine last week and got it on Wednesday. I thought it might be in a large, thin box, but no; it had brown paper and packing tape wrapped around the hoop itself with "Priority Mail" stickers on it! :-)

It's BIG. It's a 4-pound hoop; the weight comes from water. It's quite easy to get and keep going. It hurts, though, and I don't mean muscle soreness yet; I mean the actual weight of the thing going around the waist! Oof! There's one spot in particular that consistently hurts when the hoop hits it.

I suspect I'll get used to it/get better at keeping it off that one spot. I've not done it for more than two minutes at a time; I started with 30 seconds and am working my way up slowly, as someone else had suggested.

shakti, if your friend doesn't mind letting us all know, I wouldn't mind knowing how to make one!
becareful not to throw a hip out or anything. I am sure your bones are getting brittle in your young age
I found a really neat tutorial on making your own hoops here.

also, Hooping.org is a treasure trove of info.

I sense a new hobby coming on. :)
Ooooo, thanks, nyad!!!

Edited to add: Wow! Really, thanks for that tutorial site! I like to give toys to my friends at our Christmas brunch (I give their children toys, too, of course!), and hula hoops are a great idea for this season!! Oh, I can see us all out in the yard now after brunch hooping it up!! lol!!

I'll have to remember to take pictures!! :-D
I think you could even add weight to those by inserting wire or cable into the tubing before sealing.  Not sure if water would work, but it might be worth a try.

Haha!  Much better than crocheted potholders!
Yeah, the tutorial said to use water or sand to add weight. And beans or rice, or some other similar thing, for noise, if one wanted what we'd have called a shoop-hoop when I was young.

I started giving the adults toys the year after I gave all the kids Chinese yoyos (in addition to other things). The adults were playing with them more than the kids were! Oh, everyone had fun with them! They are a great stocking stuffer, and a good office toy, too. Play-doh, yoyos, touch-a-bubble... these folks like to play. :-)

So this year, all adults and kids just might be getting hoops at brunch; I hope the weather's nice on brunch day!
You know, the more weight you add to it, the less of a workout you will get because centriphical force takes over and you do less work on account of the weight and the self-perpetuating motion.

The lightweight kid hula hoops are the best because your own body has to maintain motion for the hoop to go around. It also feels better on the middle because it doesn't dig into your hips. But through personal experience and other sources, the less weight, the better. It seems as if it would be the opposite, and that's what companies are banking on.

I haven't gotten a hold of my friend, sorry!
Thank for link on making your own hoop. That is super! I am going to try this this week! :)))

Do you think this is a good form of exercise for someone over 50 who has 40lbs. to lose?  I do yoga 2 x a week but I need a lot more.  I just don't know how to gain the core strength I need to have really good form while exercising, etc.  I've tried Pilates several times, but I just feel hopeless at it.  Pilates classes demoralize me.

Hula hooping seems like it would be fun and would really help develop my weak core.  Thanks!!!!!!!!

Its funny you mentioned hula hooping... my friend has been doing it for a month and has lost over ten pounds... I was amazed

I am so glad you posted this, I would have never in my wildest dreams thought of hula hooping as a form of exercise... I am definitely hopping on this bandwagon!

Does it work as well as crunches for abs?  I despise doing crunches... Would I be able to use this as a successful replacement?
