My mom and I were wanting to try hummus, but we don't quite have a recipe....  Could anybody help us out here? Thanks!

200g cooked chickpeas
1 clove garlic
1 tbsp tahini (optional)
1 tbsp olive oil
1 lemon, juiced
Salt and freshly ground pepper

Whizz it all up in a blender, adjust seasoning until it's how you like it! You can also add things like roasted red peppers, coriander and extra lemon etc for different flavours.

You're in luck!  Here's a video about how to make traditional hummus, from our Advice section, video library.

You can leave out the olive oil if you would like a lower fat dip.

They sound simple enough, but what would the serving size be for yours imaginary_ways?

Thank you!! I'll probably try both!

:]

I tried the Basic Hummus recipe that is here on CC.  Except I double the recipe to make a larger amount, but I cut the water in half, and I cut the oil in half because the almond butter has a lot of oils in it anyways.  I also add more garlic and lemon juice to taste after I make it.  I recommend a hummus, turkey, cucumber sandwich.  I LOVE them and they are filling.

tahini is hard to find... if you add sesame seeds and sesame oil, it tastes good too

mmm hummus :D

p.s. what is tahini?

my recipe:

Canned Chickpeas

Tahini

garlic

salt

lemon juice (a lot! it always works well with any legume dish, try also to use it in a red lentils soup)

olive oil

ground cumin

tabasco sauce

parsley (a lot!)

put all in a food processor with some warm water and blend until smooth.

I think I'll have it for dinner tonight, yummy!

Tahini is a sesame seeds paste used in many recipes from middle east and north africa, where the use of seeds and legumes is very large (i.e. falafel are fantastic!). I Italy we can only find it in ethnic stores or organic health food stores.

You can find it at Whole Foods.

I would not make it without tahini... Some people have suggested subbing peanut butter, but without tahini it just doesn't taste right... If you can find a Middle Eastern food store then get citric acid (sometimes called sour salt) and add around 1/4 teaspoon to any hummus recipe. You will thank me. Good luck.

you are so awesome for asking this question... i was just wondering this yesterday!!

oh, you know what is even better than pita chips with hummus??? red bell pepper slices!! it's really good and lower in cals :D
