i'm currently trying to gain... 5'4"/5'5"ish and 98-99 pounds from the start. went to a sushi buffet last night and downed like 4 plates. it was nice i guess until i started to feel the effects like an hour later. since i was also short on calories from earlier in the week i came home and forced myself to eat some snacks to make sure i was okay. i also ate well before dinner (full breakfast/lunch/snacks) so i'm extremely stuffed right now (this morning). I know i've definitely exceeded 2500 by astronomical numbers yesterday but i just am not hungry right now... should i still keep going by 2500 today or just wait till i'm hungry. if i'm ever going to be hungry again that is. i definitely felt like a binge yesterday and i'm still feeling the effects it's horrible! however i don't want to engage in any restriction or ED type of behavior.
ur not hungry yet bc all that food is still digestin...
totally normal!
eat when you get hungry.
you will get hungry!
try to just go about ur day & not stress over it. stressin will do no good.
yes, you need to gain weight so eat your calories... but if the thought of food is too much right now, try having something small right now like a peice of fruit or yogurt, having breakfast gets your metabolism going so it won't be too long after till you are hungry again... also you could just drink your calories (milk, juice, boost, protein shake, etc.) something nutritious that wont over fill you
you are trying to gain so this behavior is totally normal. Also what is normal is being extremely full...but unfortunately you have to eat even when you are not hungry. Try and eat something small when you are full like this and maybe havee some tea with honey. Also i find that a little bit of stretching helps out alot. This week try and get your minimum of 2500 everyday so you are not stuffing on the last day....this can stress out your body.
It sucks, but yes in order to gain, you will need continue eating even though your not hungry.
If you don't continue and only eat when your hungry, it will hinder the gaining process, either slowing it down or stopping it. In turn making your life even more miserable.
thanks for all the great replies. yes it does suck i feel SO incredibly sick but i know it's good for me and will be worth it in the end. just gotta fight through it haha.
Think about it this way: Losing weight is eating slightly less than what your body needs to maintain its weight, you could be a little hungry and it's normal (there are strategies to help dieters cope with hunger, but you get it), gaining weight is eating more than your body needs, you could be pretty full and it's normal - it's the same thing, there are strategies to cope with fullness (eating higher calorie low bulk food, drinking your calories), but the fact remains that to gain weight you need to eat more than you need. Eating even though you're not hungry is exactly what you need to be doing.
Getting your calories from drinks and or supplements isn't strongly advised from what I am told, with regards to gaining weight from an eating disorder. Part of the gaining process is the reassociation with eating food, key word eating. If you absolutely cannot eat any more and you are still under your intake goal, then go for it, but don't make a habit of it.
Osainto hit it on the head. Part of recovering involves learning to EAT again and that doesn't mean drinking a large part of your calories. If you're under your goal at the end of the day and don't want to eat any more, sure. If you're out and you get a fancy coffee or similar as a treat, sure. But not on a day-to-day basis of drinking most of your calories, as this teaches you nothing about eating.
All the advice about sticking through it that you have been given is good. And believe it or not, hunger will return IF you keep eating regularly. Your body gradually adjusts. Push through it, it's worth it in the end.
yes that is true, you shouldn't need to drink or supplement most of your calories when recovering, or ever! (I strongly hate Boost, not for the taste or anything but because it is an unnatural way to eat and full of sugar and additives, it's not good for you)
But having a glass of milk or juice, is normal for most people, so getting used to the habit of being "normal" is never a bad idea. And that extra little something for "breakfast" will help to stimulate her appetite, so that she will be hungrier later.
your body will adjust to more calories and will scream at you when it's hungry, so just keep pushing and soon enough it will just be instinct
Ok, WOW thanks for all the great advice. I really don't like drinking calories anyways never did. I'm going to see this recovery in every positive way possible and will try to enjoy food rather than push it away. i actually feel a lot better lots more energy less depressed. hopefully i can keep it up! Just a little scared about my metabolism its so hard not to be worried about whether it will catch up or not i feel like I'm risking it but i know it'll be worth it.
