Hungry, shakey ect

Quote  |  Reply

Ok, so, not sure if this is the right place to ask, but here goes.

So, I've been getting 1200-1300 cal a day for the last 2 weeks, aside from the two days I do martial arts on, when I eat loooads. The counter here says I use 1500 in a session? Mad. But at least I get many yummy carbs and protiens to eat.

ANYWAY, point is, I'v started getting shakey, especially in my hands, and I feel lightheaded quite a lot, well, my brain feels funny, not sure lightheaded is the correct term... And no matter when/what I eat I am always starving in the evenings. So, should I eat more, or different things? Or am I just worrying about nothing? Any advice or ideas would be much appreciated.

How much were you eating before? Try upping your calories, and umm go see a doctor? ASAP.

What  you are describing sounds like a blood sugar issue. I am hypoglycemic and insulin resistant and I get very sick if I don't eat. Honestly I don't know how anyone can survive on 1200 calories a day. I would up  your calorie intake a little, eat more often and make sure your diet is clean/balanced. Also drink a LOT of water and limit the caffeine. Complex carbs as opposed to simple. Be sure you are eating enough good fat and protein. People get it in their heads that fat and carbs are bad. Not so we need them both to function and be healthy.

Hello - I had the same problem and have solved it with planned snacks while I"m at work which made all the difference.  In fact I'm maintaining and still follow the same schedule I did while dieting.  I have breakfast at 7am (old fashioned oatmeal)  - snack at 10am (non fat yogurt, alomnds, an apple etc) - lunch at noon (soup, veggies and rice, salad w/a protein etc) and snack at 2.

and...as littleshelly's mentioned water, water water!

Echoing what has been said, this sounds like low blood sugar. You are likely also eating too few calories. Another post of yours puts you at 19 - CC's tools are not accurate for under 21's. If you are a female under 21 you need a minimum of 1500 calories sedentary, and if you are male under 21 you need a minimum of 1800 calories sedentary to survive. If you are exercising, you need even more than that. And this is the bare minimum.

Unless you are very, very short and small it is very likely you will need even more calories than those minimum guidelines. If you are under 21, CC's tools are inaccurate and you should use this calculator instead: http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html as you are still growing. Yes, even in the later years - there's more going on inside of you that you simply can't see.

Eating too low a calorie intake, or having a deficit from your BMR greater than 1000 results in something called "survival mode", where your body holds every last thing it can get in expectance of a famine. Water, food, calories. Explained:

  • Dieting & Metabolism - This article explains starvation mode and why undereating is counter productive.
  • The Body Neglected - This is what happens when you undereat for an extended period of time.

The physical dangers that come with undereating are numerous. You put yourself at risk of osteoporosis, of loss of fertility if you lose your period, hair loss, electrolyte problems, a weakening of the immune system, low blood pressure, blood disorders such as anemia, heart problems, and even death. The mental woes that come alongside can be just as devestating. Depression is common in undereaters as well as distorted perceptions and problems like Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Please, make an appointment with your doctor, as potentially low blood sugar is a serious problem when not under control. Furthermore, use the calculator for under 21s - again, http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html - to figure out your actual burn never going under 1500 for a female and 1800 for a male, and start eating more. Good luck.

Thanks everyone, especially Lalabanana for all that info and the links. That's a fair shocking difference in calories, oops. All the BMI/calorie calculators I've been looking at are way under that, even taking my age into account. No wonder I've been feeling under 100%. ^_^'

Alright, gonna start eating a lot more, plan it out so I won't get hungry later on, drink water, and find out some things about blood sugar. And if I don't feel alright in a day or so I'll go bother the Doc.

Thank you again, you have been most helpful.
