Hungry, after a week..

Quote  |  Reply

After a week of undereating because of being sick, I'm now eating my calories needed, except I'm like really hungry.  My stomach is getting bloated when I eat, and my submandibular gland swells every time I'm hungry.  It's crazy.  I'm extremely hungry and I just finished eating.  The thing is when I start to eat I get bloated.  Help needed. :/

You'd have to post some more info - what are your stats, how much are you eating, what are you eating/drinking?  Is it possible if you are still sick?

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Choose the foods carefully and eat slowly...  If you've been really sick you have to coax your appetite back with very plain, easily digested foods and not overload your stomach.

Fluids are the best place to start... teas, juices, milky drinks, broths and soups.  And then follow up with simple things like stewed fruit, steamed fish, thin porridge (oatmeal), plain yoghurts, pureed vegetables, mashed potatoes or squashes.   Eat 'little and often' rather than having very big meals at one time.

I'm sure you'll feel better in a day or two but, if you don't, talk to your doctor.

A couple of the first indications I had that I had a thyroid problem was that my glands were swelling and I'd eat and still lose a ton of weight. I'm talking like five square meals a day and losing 15 lbs in a week (Not good). I was also diagnosed with mono right before I started tests for hyperthyroidism. However, keep in mind that since you are still getting better from just recently being sick, your glands might still be swelling from that, and I'm always extra hungry when I'm sick. I agree with jane in that if it continues after a few days, talk to a doctor. I'm just describing what happened to me right before I was diagnosed with grave's disease. Remember, I'm not a doctor.

I'm 5'5'', weigh 123-124, I only drink water, and I'm eating a minimum of 1500 calories.

I don't think I'm sick anymore. And I hope I feel better too :)

The only thing I really eat is oatmeal, chicken, organic pastas, veggies, fruits, kashi wheat crackers, and soy.  I take 1- 1 1/2 eating for each meal, and my gland swells everytime I feel hungry.  And I eat 5-6 meals a day.  Its so strange.  I don't know whats going on.

Yeah, I've had this issue for about 4-5 days now, and I'm kind of worried.  What is graves disease?

It actually sounds a lot worse than it really is. It's called Grave's Disease because Doctor Grave discovered it (one heck of a name for a doctor)...its a thyroid disease that a lot of people get. They don't know the exact reason for it, but its been attributed to being stress enduced. Personally, my immune system is attacking my thyroid, which makes it hyper active. (My thyroid feels threatened so secreets more of specific hormones and less of others). This makes my metabolism too active, which is why I was losing so much weight. Grave's Disease is a very light immune problem, but I got sick for the first time a couple days ago since I was diagnosed with it. So, take it with a grain of salt. My standard of living has not changed since I've been diagnosed.

There's a pretty simple blood test and xray that tests for a thyroid problem, and its really easy to control. Usually, you take one of two types of medicine, or you can have your thyroid removed. If you have only been feeling symptoms for 4-5 days, in my opinion its related to being sick. If you're worried, you can call your doctor. :)
