I did the hydrostatic bodyfat and RMR testing...my experience

Quote  |  Reply

Hi everyone, I am finally doing the hydrostatic bodyfat testing as well as the RMR tomorrow.  I've never done it before and I'm nervous!  What's everyone's experience with the testing?  Has it helped or made you cry?

I've never done any type of testing- only use my Heart rate monitor to do the fitness test V02 ( Polar F11) and I also only use the tape measure and online site to get a bf% as this can change so much in a short time after starting a good workout routine.

When I was in college, they made all of the football team do hydrostatic bodyfat measurements at the start of Spring, end of Spring, start of Fall, just to see if everyone is sticking to their plans, and hitting their goals and I always found it helpful.  I was a back so I wanted to keep my weight within a tight range of about 8-10 pounds so I played at my fastest and it was much more useful for me than a scale.  You'll be fine, and it'll be great information to have.  Just keep in mind, if you use any other method for bodyfat measurement, it probably won't be a good comparison.

Thanks for the replies!  I am so nervous!  Just a couple of hours now.  I wish I'd gotten the test before so I had something to compare it to.  I am in pretty good shape now, and it would have been better to know what I was before to know how far I've come rather than just berating myself over an absolute number.  But I was way too scared to do it before!  I'm really interested in the RMR most because I want to see how accurate these sites are at calculating!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I am SO happy about doing these tests, and I recommend them to anyone who is able to get them.  I got so much information out of it.  For instance, my RMR is over 1700 cals, with about 500 cals for daily activities (not working out).  This is what is considered "fast metabolism, about 20% above average.  So with my heavy workouts everyday, I am burning close to 3000 cals, and eating less than 1600 on most days!  Sedentary setting on this site wasn't even close, and this big deficit explains a lot.  My body fat is also at 19% which is 2% below "ideal" for my age and stats, which also explains a lot.  All of this gives me so much peace of mind...and I get to eat more...wooo hooo!  Anyway, try it guys.  It's worth it to know, and it's not scary at all.

I've had the hydrostatic done once before but I've never done RMR. Where can I get it done? I've screwed my metabolism over pretty well so it'd be nice to see how many calories i actually burn at rest and have an actual number to work on and try to improve!

I had my RMR tested at a local community college. I bet most offer it.

They have a mobile unit that comes to my gym once a quarter.  I think they're a local company to here, but I'm sure if you google one in your city or ask at your gym, you can find a place that does it.

Okay, I will check! thanks!

Anyone know where to get RMR tested in Boston area?

Bump

Try a runner's shoe store, there's one in my area, the kind that checks your gait and fits you for the right shoes and everything, they have people come out every few weeks and you can sign up in advance to get the RMR test. Also, some dieticians do it.
