Okay may be a silly question...but how do u know when your body has become hypermetabolic when in recovery for an ed. Also how does this happen?

my body went hypermetabolic for a short while when i was very very underwieght, you will know when you simply lose weight and you cant eat enough to not do so.
I think it just happens because your body has been starving for so long that when you start feeding it properly again it gets excited...at first your body might hold on to extra calories thinking it isn't going to get anymore, but after a few weeks of eating well your body starts to burn calories like crazy trying to make up for all the damage done from restricting.

Like dartinton said, you can tell that metabolism is in hyperburn when you are eating tons of calories and still not gaining or even losing weight. Tons like 3,000-4,000. You also may feel hot and flushed and sweaty a lot, particularly at night. Just keep feeding your body and your metabolism will eventually settle down.

I know for me, it was when I wouldn't gain a thing on anything less that 4,000 calories a day. When I first started, I would lose on anything under 3,000. I definitely needed 4 to 5,000 calories a day to gain anything when mathematically a normal person could gain a pound a week just by adding 500 extra calories each day above their maintenance.

It sounds like a dream come true, but it's actually quite a Phelps-sized challenge to meet everyday. I'm pretty sure I have a natural hypermetabolism (possibly borderline hypoglycemic even), because I used to eat like 3k a day without even thinking twice and still remained naturally underweight. My father is the same way. But my mother, on the other hand, has hypothyroidism and takes about 6 months just to lose 5 lbs! She hates it. She used to be 110, and then after me & my brother, never got below 130 again.

If she started eating 3,000k per day, would her metabolism be forced to speed up or would she just gain a ton of weight?! I am curious about whether this mechanical eating approach works universally or only for those coming back from the brink of undernourishment.

She'd gain weight.... Unless she suddenly took up marathon running that is.  In people not recovering from the brink of starvation, metabolism is usually determined by age, size, activity level, eating pattern...  and once your intake exceeds the amount of energy you're using up you store the surplus as fat.

I am a hardgainer as many of you have detailed through these postings.  We are pre-disposed to be our sleek sizes.  If we ever did want to gain weight, often times it does take a little bit more than our well rounded friends.  It's tough, but with a little extra discipline and knowledge, one can gain weight without extreme measures.  I have a blog that talks about this very topic, if you ever free to take a look.  I highly suggest it.

I do understand why society has focused on the epidemic of obesity, since many people do suffer iller fates as a result of being overweight.  But still, It would be nice for some of us hardgainers to get some attention on the national scope like we are in this gathering of minds.  There just isn't enough information or knowledge out there to guide us through our lifestyle.
