I think it's possible for people with hypothyroidism to lose weight if they really stick to a plan, definitely exercise & are consistent with taking the appropriate dosage of thyroid medication. I've been on medication for almost 16 years, but I know it's sometimes more difficult for us to lose weight. I try to do 30 minutes of exercise at least 3-4 days a week. I do cardio, use free weights & resistance equipment. About 6 weeks ago, I started Weight Watchers again. I'd lost 20 pounds on it before, so I know it works for me. I generally eat 1000 to 1100 calories a day. I've lost 12 lbs. so far & have less than 20 to go. I have noticed some toning. I'm sure I'll notice more when I lose more.
I created a workout schedule in Excel for myself....
it's a 12-week treadmill schedule, and I adjust the intensity and the duration roughly every 4 weeks or so.
Right now I'm doing something 6 days per week, for 40 minutes each time. Days 1, 3, and 5 are intervals (90 seconds walking, 30 seconds jogging), and days 2, 4, and 6 are hills (varying incline, steady pace). Day 7 is rest.
I think I'll add strength training pretty soon. My husband has some dumbells that I can use for various things.
I have definitely noticed that my legs are more toned, especially my calves.
My weight-loss calorie intake, according to this site, is 1350, since I have a very sedentary job. I usually eat about 1450-1500 to account for what I burn off in exercise.
does that help some?

hey everyone - i'm so glad there is a topic about this because i could REALLY use some advice/input...here's my situation, maybe someone out there can help me....
I am 5'4" and weight about 120 (maybe a little more) and my goal is 115. I'm finding it VERY difficult to drop this weight even though it's not that much...
Last year I had a complete thyroidectomy and Im on synthroid daily. I love working out and have worked out all my life, but lately I've noticed that working out sometimes makes my heart rate go too high and feels extremely uncomfortable, like Im going to pass out, or throw up. I checked with my doc about my synthroid levels being too high, but he said they are normal. Also I was doing a 1,000 - 1,100 calorie a day diet for a while which got me to drop the 5 pounds but I started to feel dizzy and terrible and when I began eating "normally" again I gained the weight back and then some!!
I wonder how much of my dieting woes have to do with being on Synthroid?? Does anyone out there have any advice on the best way for me to lose 5 pounds under these conditions??

I have had hypothyroidism for 3 years...steadily putting on 30 lbs. I recently started the South Beach diet....which is low carbs. I've taken off 7. It's the first thing that has worked for me.
I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 1999. I am a 5'11" male and at the most I weighed 218 and that was Jan 3 of this year. I now weigh 182. Every day, except Sunday, I wake up and exercise first thing in the morning. I usually do about 45 - 60 minutes of cardio (15-20 min bike, 15-20 min running on treadmill 6 mph, 15-20 min stairmaster) mixed with some weights. I eat right around 2000 calories/day.
For some odd reason increasing protein has help me as well. I try to get about 45% protein a day. Working out has also helped. While it's harder to lose weight being hypo it does work if we work at it like everyone else. It just seems to be harder at times. Good luck!
I was diagnosed about 7 years ago after I had some major surgery.
I mostly do cardio conditioning and seem to be better able to get it done if I wait until later in the day. Also, I know that I must maintain a large water intake (80-100 oz per day) or I will gain weight.
I find that I am a bit restricted with what floor exercises I can do because I have a rotten sense of balance. It might be age (I'm almost 48) but it is very coincidental that my balancing problem began right around the same time as my hypothyroidism. Even so, I put together a 20 minute program using the exercise ball and weights and it seems to be toning me up!
